10/19/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Chows are like cats…you either love them or you don’t. I happen to belong to the first category. Dunkaroo is not to say a sweet cookie but a reserved dame very much true to her breed. I kneeled down to her level and offered her some tasty treats that she took delicately after eying me quite gently. I did not see fear in her eyes. I petted the door at her level and she was fine with it. Let’s try you, lady. Dunkaroo was leashed in no time and off we went around the block. Great walker, most likely housetrained and cool with various dogs met. She posed for pictures, sat for treats and gave me quite a number of big smiles. I did not outfit her with a scarf as she did growl once at a staff trying to collar her. Confident about my positive encounter with Dunkaroo, I started petting her, and she accepted without any problem. Dunkaroo needs a little more time to give herself up to trust and be the Chowgirl a connoisseur would love to have as a pet. She is gorgeous, a teensy weensy chunky, wears a lush coat with one bald spot and does not own a Chow tongue. I believe in Dunkaroo and I hope that you will, too. Come and meet her at the Manhattan Care Center.
10/18/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Unaltered, Stray Other notes: Dunkaroo was tense and nervous during intake. He snapped at the admission counselor when he attempted to remove his harness. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 10/18/16 Dog-dog: 2. Dog does not approach the helper dog. Turns body to side in relation to other dog, or exits. Summary: Dunkaroo was uncomfortable with handling; he stands tall and wrinkles his muzzle when the behavior team tries to collar him. Dunkaroo is not an appropriate candidate for an assessment at this time. PLAYGROUP: Summary MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 10/17/16 During his initial medical examination, Dunkaroo appeared uncomfortable, remaining tense throughout and tolerating minimal handling; appropriate warning signals were displayed. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13)(See potential challenges) _X_Place with a New Hope partner (Dunkaroo has attempted to snap during his stay at our care centers, for this reason along with known history, we believe he would benefit best from placement with a New Hope rescue group who can further assess this behavior in a stable environment.) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Dunkaroo has displayed fearful/defensive behavior during his stay at our care centers, tolerating very minimal handling; any form of direct touch may result in a fearful bite. It is recommended that Dunkaroo be allowed a proper time to decompress to aid in acclimating him to a new environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Dunkaroo to new and unfamiliar situations.)
