02/26/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
02/26/17 18:57 Duke is friendly and outgoing towards strangers and has spent time around his owner’s 9 year old neice and is relaxed and playful with her. He plays gently with both adults and children and has spent time around lots of dogs on the street. He plays gently with every dog he meets and has never been around cats so it’s unknown how he would react. He has never bitten another animal or human. Duke is nervous during loud noises such as thunderstorms and usually trembles. He isn’t bothered when his owner takes away his food bowl but will snap if it’s a treat or bone that she’s trying to take away. If it’s a toy, he thinks his owner is trying to play. When his owner pulls him off of furniture, Duke hops right back up. He isn’t bothered when awoken from his slumber or being held from something he wants and will usually just pull towards it. He tolerates baths but will struggle when being placed in the tub. Duke loves being brushed but will pull his paw away when it’s time for a nail clipping. He’s friendly when someone unfamiliar approaches his home and humans. Duke’s owner describes him as friendly, affectionate, playful and excitable. He has a medium activity level and enjoys playing tug with stuffed animals and chasing his humans around. His owner loves how he lays in bed with her and that he loves running around so much. When his owner is home he tends to follow her around and sleeps on her bed with her. He’s kept mostly indoors and is very house-trained. He only goes potty on the newspaper provided in his home or outside on grass. When left home-alone, Duke is well-behaved and has never been crate-trained. He knows sit, stay, and stop. For exercise, he enjoys brisk walks on-leash and will pull slightly if he sees something that excites him. Duke eats Kibbles and Bits dry food, a medium bowlful, 3 times a day. He loves soft treats such as beggin strips and sausages.
02/28/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Duke is a “spic and span” gentleman Beagle, so well groomed and the perfect weight, which is so rare for the breed. He owns gorgeous eyes and his coat is pure silk. Duke is a little under the weather and the veterinary team is trying to figure out what is bothering him. He is willing and able, though. He accepts my leash, and off we go for a walk and some quiet time in the yard. He does his business, not really marking his territory, and mostly stands in the middle of the green grass, just accepting caresses and wagging his tail. Two other dogs joined us in the area and Duke did not appear at all bothered by them. Duke seems a little lost, so what he needs ASAP is a new home, a caring and loving human, and a stop at a veterinary office. If you are a Beagle lover, Duke is waiting for you, right here at the Manhattan Care Center.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to potential for possession guarding and to discomfort with some handling. Older, gentle children can be considered with an in depth interaction. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding (Duke’s previous over reported that he will snap if a treat or bone is taken from him. For this reason we advise against ever removing items from Duke’s possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment.) _X_Handling/touch sensitivity (Previous owner reported that Duke will snap when his belly is touched. It is important to go slow when handling Dukle and give him the option to walk away from any social interaction. He should never be forced to submit to petting or handling.)
