02/03/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Meet our newest elderbull Duke (or Mellow Yellow as I like to call him!). He’s 10 years young and ‘bombproof’, the kind of guy you could take anywhere knowing he’d be showered with smiles and praise just for being his own sweet self. Duke’s well trained and keen for attention, active yet easy-going, and while we’re out for a walk he seems totally unfazed by all the people passing by, including noisy children. He poses wonderfully for pictures and takes treats gently, and when another volunteer needed help opening a door while holding an energetic dog within easy reach, Duke kept sitting politely in place as we fumbled for the key–what a good boy! Duke’s motto in life is live and let live, with some friendly tail wags and kisses thrown in for good measure, and he gives hugs on demand, too. What more could you ask? A great family dog just waiting for a family to love, this handsome gent is already neutered and ready to head home as soon as you are. Come in and meet Duke for yourself, and chances are you’ll be walking back out with a full heart and a new best friend by your side.
01/31/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Limited Profile 1/31/17 Neutered, Stray (Unknown how long Duke was in the previous home) Previously lived with: Adults, a teenager (age fourteen), and three small dogs. Behavior toward dogs: Relaxed, playful, and tolerant of the dogs he lived with but is reactive to some other dogs, lunging and growling. Behavior toward cats: Relaxed and tolerant of visiting cats. Bite history: Yes, bit a small dog that growled at him in the owner’s building. Duke grabbed the dog and shook him, bite did not result in broken skin. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 2/2/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is open. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Duke was social throughout his assessment and displayed no behavioral concerns. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 1/31/17 During his initial medical exam, Duke allowed handling but growled when given shots. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Duke’s activity level in the home so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center be has displayed a moderate level of energy. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration (Owner stated that Duke will react to some dogs, lunging and barking at them, especially in the apartment building and when the other dog reacts first. He has bitten a dog in the owner’s building. We recommend using positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach Duke to look at you rather than dogs around him. It will be necessary to be careful with him when walking him on leash around other dogs.)
02/02/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: Duke has interacted politely and remains tolerant around other dogs in the care center. Duke has recently begun to display high levels of anxiety during interactions. Duke’s previous owner cites that he has had an incident of altercation with smaller dogs outside of the home, though reports succesful interactions with smaller dogs that lived in the home. The behavior department recommends that Duke meet respectful dogs on a one-on-one basis, via slow introductions. Duke should not be forced to interact or have prolonged interaction with dogs he may be uncomfortable around. 2/2: When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Duke is polite and tolerant during interaction with large and small dogs. 2/3-2/4: Duke greets and sniffs but is becomes anxious when with a dog that does not engage. He will then bark and seek attention from handlers. 2/5-2/8: Duke offers brief greeting to dogs, then becomes anxious and seeks to exit the yard. 2/11: Duke continues to offer a brief greeting then become anxious and seeks to exit the yard.
