04/30/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Duke was so covered in ticks when he arrived that he started to doze off as medical staff worked to remove them…if that’s not a good patient, I don’t know what is! He can be eager to get out of his cage and not so eager to go back in it, but is still very cooperative. He walks nicely on leash, seems housebroken and is very mild-mannered. He was a little shy at first with me, but would still approach for petting and quickly wag his low tail when I spoke to him. A few walks later and he eagerly props his paws up on me and is very waggy…he’s super sweet! He’d love to meet you at Brooklyn ACC.
04/27/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Duke came in as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. At intake it was reported Duke was calm and allowed all handling. During SAFER Duke came into the assessment room shy and nervous, he was friendly and social towards the assessor. He allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Duke follows but was a bit fearful during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Duke was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Duke has been showing fearful behavior. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Duke is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. In addition, we recommend that introductions are done slowly, and Duke be given the opportunity to interact at his own pace. The behavior department feels he can be suitable for an “Average” adopter. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body a bit tense, mouth closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Toy 1: No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Duke approaches the gate but is hesitant to greet the helper dog. He is a little bit sexually motivated but responds immediately to interruptions. Otherwise Duke mostly keeps to himself and explores the yard.
04/25/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
