Medical Summary scan neg ~12yo, neutered male qarh. nervous, allowed all handling but resented palpation of hind end, great appetite, normal stool moderate dental tartar/gingivitis, nuclear sclerosis ou, no ocular or nasal discharge, ears wnl normal thoracic auscultation; normal abdominal palpation thick hair coat, slightly matted around flanks; ambulatory x 4, weak in hind end; bcs 5/9 a: geriatric, gingivitis, weak in hind end – rule out arthritis vs other p: rec rimadyl 137.5mg po q24 x 5 days. rec full geriatric work up with placement. continue to monitor while at bacc. good short term prognosis

PROFILE :
BASIC INFORMATION: Duke is a black/brown German Shepherd/ Collie mix. Duke was given to owner as a gift & has no known health issues. Duke came in together with dog Dukessa & are bonded. Duke was surrendered to ACC due to residential move to a residence that does not allow pets.
SOCIALIZATION: Duke is friendly around strangers and loves getting pet. Duke has been exposed around small children, Duke gets along with children & adults. Duke has resided with another dog & is bonded to her. He plays,sleeps & eats with her. Duke has not bitten or scratched another animal or person. Duke is best described as a loving, affectionate & playful dog.
BEHAVIOR: Duke does not show signs of aggression when owner touches food bowl while she is eating. Owner is able to take bone, toy or any object from his mouth with no problem. Duke enjoys bathing and grooming, when an unfamiliar person approaches the home, he barks & makes the owner aware. Duke will tip over trash can occasionally.
FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW: Duke has a medium to low activity level. Owners favorite things of Duke is, he is extremely affectionate & is always there to greet the owner. He would do best in a family home or a single person home with alot of time. Duke is familiar with the commands sit, stop & come in spanish. For exercise, he loves to go ‘out for brisk walks. Duke has been kept mostly indoors & enjoys eating dry & wet food from brand Pedigree. Duke will go potty on grass or cement.
BEHAVIOR UPON INTAKE: Upon intake, Duke displayed a loose body & an open mouth. Duke loved to receive attention from the counselor. Duke allowed all handling & scanned negative.
SAFER: EXPERIENCED HOME
Duke previously lived with 1 adult, another dog and has been around small children. The owner stated Duke gets along with children, adults and the other dog in the house hold. The owner describes Duke as loving, affectionate and playful. The owner mentioned Duke is house broken and has a medium activity level. It was reported by the owner Duke like to tip over the trash can occasionally.
At intake it was reported Duke had loose body posture with his mouth open, he allowed all handling. During SAFER Duke came into the assessment room calm and relaxed, he was friendly and social towards the assessor, allowed all handling items to be conducted. Duke was relaxed during the tag interaction, during paw squeeze item Duke was tense and moved his paw away from the handler next flank was applied and he didn’t respond at all. During the resources portion of the assessment Duke was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Due to some concerns with Duke uncomfortable with his paw being touched, the behavior department feels he can be suitable for an experience adopter with no small children.
Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft.
Squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes tense.
Flank squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all.
Toy 1: No interest.
Dog-dog: Once off leash with other dogs, Duke avoids greets at first but eventually lets the other dog have brief sniff. He is uncomfortable with long interactions and offers a correction when the other dog is in his face.
