Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Altered, Owner Surrender Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward children: Gentle and playful. Behavior toward dogs: Playful with small dogs, not good with large dogs Behavior toward cats: Playful FG/RG: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Has a very high energy level Other notes: Duke is reported to not do well with strangers and will snap at men; Upon intake Duke lunged and snapped at the counselor. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 12/08/16 Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Duke head flipped and snapped during collaring so the handling portions of the assessment were omitted. Duke actively avoids any form of interaction and is made uncomfortable by forms of direct contact, for these reasons, the behavior department believes Duke may benefit best from placement with a New hope Rescue group. PLAYGROUP: When greeting large, male dogs through a barrier Duke is soft and wagging. He will hop around and begin bark in attempts to solicit play. His owner reports he is “playful with small dogs and aggressive with large dogs.” Based on this information the behavior department recommends not placing Duke into a home with other large dogs at this time. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 12/5/16 During his initial medical exam Duke appeared nervous, he was growling and resisting handling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner (Duke may benefit best from placement with a New Hope rescue group who can appropriately manage and assess his behavior in a more stable environment.) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (See known history; Duke may likely require significant behavioral modification as we cannot be certain if any other behaviors are being suppressed as a result of the shelter environment.)
