05/27/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I found Ducky curled up on her bed in her kennel, and not quite sure she wanted to venture out on this terribly hot day. It didn’t take much persuading, and out she came. A short walk in the street, and we both decided the back yard might be cooler. Happy off leash, she sat for photos, giving me a chance to admire her gorgeously clean and well groomed caramel and white coat. While she enjoyed playing with a squeaky toy, her true love as it turned out, was playing in the water when I squirted the hose. How appropriate is her name as she was like a duck in the water!!! Jumping up to play, opening her mouth to drink, Ducky was like a kid running through the sprinkler system on a brutally hot day. She loved it, and I loved watching her having such a good time. Enjoying some petting, and then enjoying being toweled off, Ducky has opened up quite a bit since her initial intake, during which she was nervous. Sometimes all we need is a little time, and a fun hose to play in, and all can be well with the world again. I think that Ducky still has more personality to show us, and I’m looking forward to seeing her bloom. But most of all, I’m looking forward to watching her wag her tail out the door with her new person for a lifetime of fun and love. A volunteer updates: I love this sweet, shy little girl. Her beautiful little face is sometimes sheathed in wrinkles as she looks up wondering if a person is friend material. Happy to come out for a walk and a chance to go potty, she’s so lovely on leash. Once business is taken care of, she greets everyone with a gentle tail wag, and enjoys some petting from all before we head into the yard. Leash free, she comes over for kisses, perks up with a squeaky toy, and when she sees the hose starts wagging her tail. She loves playing in the water; Miss Ducky is so aptly named. She’s shy, so will need a gentle approach and a little time to warm up, but she’s so worth the little bit of time it will take to assure her you’re her friend.
05/21/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 5/17/17 Unaltered Female,Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/21/17 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is open. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Ducky displayed a high level of anxiety on her assessment, whining and panting persistently. She allowed all handling and appeared to be social with the assessor. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: Ducky has displayed high levels of anxiety during interactions with dogs in the care center. Ducky has shown brief interest in play with select dogs, however may quickly become uncomfortable with prolonged interactions. The behavior department recommend that Ducky be introduced to other dogs on a one on one basis. Introductions to other dogs should be supervised, and conducted only with respectful dogs at this time. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/17/17 During her initial medical exam, Ducky was fearful and growling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Ducky so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful: Ducky has displayed fearful behavior in the care center, growling when fearful. We feel she will do best with an adopter prepared to allow her to warm up to new people and new environments slowly. Use of treats and other rewards will help to make new experiences positive. _X_Anxiety: Ducky diaplys a high level of anxiety in the care center, whining and panting throughout her assessment. We have no history on her in a home so we do not know if this behavior will present a challenge in a new future home environment. Positive reinforcement, reward based training is advised to deal with this issue should it arise in the home. Giving Ducky alternative things to do, such as Kongs and puzzle toys, is recommended. She should be interacted with in a slow, calm manner and never be forced to submit to petting or handling. Ducky should be given time to acclimate to her new home. _X_Recommend no dog parks : The behavior department recommends that introductions between Ducky and other dogs be conducted on a one on one basis at this time.
05/21/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Ducky has displayed high levels of anxiety during interactions with dogs in the care center. 5/21: When introduced to a male dog off-leash, while uncomfortable, Ducky greets politely, then warms up and engages in soft bouts of play. 5/22: Ducky initially enters the pen while ignoring approach from the other dogs in the yard. She offers brief bows and engages in bouts of soft play. Ducky quickly loses interest, and anxiously wanders the yard while pacing, whinging, and seeking exit. She growls, barks, and backs away when approached at this point. 5/23: Ducky ignores the other dog and anxiously seeks exit.
