06/29/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
06/29/17 10:22 Basic Info Duchess is a 3 year old brown and white dog whose owners moved away or don’t have time. She was last brought to a vet in April of 2017. Duchess has been with her owner since she was 3 weeks old. Socialization Duchess is very outgoing around strangers and when they come over she wags her tail and jumps on them and tries to kiss them in the face. Duchess is around children often and lives with a 4 year old who she is relaxed and playful with although sometimes she knocks him down when playing. She plays somewhat rough with adults as well. Duchess is really good around other dogs and often interacts with a family pet small dog with whom she i s playful with and is comfortable eating with and around. She has never been exposed to cats but lives with a guinea pig who walks around with Duchess and she is not bothered by it. She has never botten a person or an animal before. Behavior Duchess is house trained to us ethe bathroom outside and never barks. She does not destroy any household items. Duchess is not bothered by having her food touched or taken out of her mouth as well as her treats and toys. Duchess struggles when it is bath time but once in the bath she allows herself to be washed. She pulls her feet away when having her nails trimmed but allows restraint. She does not bark when the someone unfamiliar approaches thehouse. New Family Duchess has a medium level of activity at home and loves to play with balls and to throw them then chase after them, she also enjoys rope toys. She sleeps in bed with ehr owner an is fed purina dry food thrice daily. She is house trained to go outside and is well behaved when left alone at home and in the yard. Duchess knows the commands sit, stop and go to your corner. She pulls lightly on the leash and is not walked off leash. Intake Behavior Duchess jumped at and on counselor as soon as he approached her and tried top lick his face. When approached with the scanner she ducked out of the way and ran away from counselor with all of her strength and when scanner was placed on counter she walked away from where she saw the scanner. Duchess had a loose body and wagging tail during entire intake and allowed all handling despite high energy levels she allowed counselor to restrain for collaring.
07/01/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Duchess lived with her family since she was 3 weeks old and is understandably confused as to what happened to turn her life upside down. She joins us with an outstanding resume of a family dog who has never met a stranger (everyone is greeted with a wag and a kiss), is relaxed and playful with children, although can knock down the young ones when playing, is good with other dogs including small ones, and lived well with a guinea pig who walked around the house. Well, OK! We’re also told Duchess is housetrained (check!), doesn’t guard her stuff, is well behaved when left home alone, and loves to play with balls and rope toys. Duchess is a beauty in her tan coat, full figure, and shining eyes. Her tail never stops wagging, she loved being in my lap for petting and kisses, comes when I call her and said no thank you to both varieties of my treats, but did show off her sit when I offered them. She’s a sweetheart who is looking for a new family to love and play with. With her outstanding resume, she’s accepting applications to be her new family. Don’t pass up the chance to meet her today.

INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Duchess had a loose body, displayed a high level of activity, and was relaxed. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/29/17 During her initial medical exam, Duchess was active and allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Her previous owners describe Duchess as a medium-energy dog. In the care center she has been active and enthusiastic. She may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when she becomes overstimulated. She will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help her to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Duchess’ previous owner reported that she plays in a rough manner with young children and can knock them over. Older children who are comfortable around large, jumpy dogs should have an interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: Duchess jumps up a lot at the care center and her previous owner stated she knocks small children over while playing. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.
