SAFE 01/12/18
Hello, my name is Dougie. My animal id is #17411. I am a male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 01-Jan-2018.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Dougie is at risk for both behavior and medical reasons. Dougie has been diagnosed with Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex, which is contagious to other dogs. Behaviorally, Dougie has shown concerning behaviors, lunging, growling and snapping at passers-by, and is very difficult to handle. For these reasons, Dougie could only be placed with a New Hope partner, and MUST be collected from the Manhattan shelter no later than 5pm Wednesday January 10th.
My medical notes are…

Behavior Condition: 4. Orange
Date of intake:: 1/1/2018
Spay/Neuter status:: No
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray
Date of assessment:: 1/3/2018
Summary:: Dougie has not allowed handling at the care center, growling and snapping when approached. Out of concerns for his stress levels and due to safety concerns, he is not a good candidate for a handling assessment.
Date of intake:: 1/3/2018
Summary:: Dougie was growling, lunging, and showing teeth.
Date of initial:: 1/1/2018
Summary:: Dougie was growling and snapping.
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Dougie so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Dougie has displayed distance increasing behaviors (barking, lunging, showing teeth). He has become more comfortable engaging with handlers through the kennel doors by coming up to the door, accepting enrichment and treats, but continues to be uncomfortable with leashing and engaging outside the kennel. He has yet to warm up to handlers to allow touch.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Dogie is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Dougie has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Dougie has displayed a potential for defensive aggression at the care center, lunging, growling, and snapping at people when they approach him or attempt to handle him. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Dougie to new and unfamiliar situations.
