06/25/17 08:30 Dotty is an 8 year old medium sized female dog. She was a gift to the owner and he has had her for 8 years. The main reason for surrendering Dotty is due to her unmanagable allergies and skin condition. She suffers from enviromental allergies. Around strangers, she can be very friendly and outgoing or she can be shy; owner states she picks and chooses people. She has lived with a young child her whole life and the child currently is 7 years old. SHe is very friendly and respectful of her. She plays gently with both adults and children. She has lived with both small and large dogs and was reported to be relaxed of them. Her owner states however, she will bark at dogs on her walks. She has not spent time with cats so her behavior with them is unknown. She has not bitten a person or animal. Her owner reports she has no behavioral problems at home. During thunderstorms or fireworks, she is not bothered. Her owner states that she is not bothered by having her food bowl touched, removing items from her mouth, bathing her, trimming her nails, or touching her paws. She may bark at strangers that approach her. Dotty is described as a friendly dog with low energy. She mostly enjoys spending time sleeping or going for slow walks. She tends to greet her owner at the door when he arrives and does not play with toys or plays games. She eats dry food only. She is well behaved when left alone in the house and has not been crate trained. She loves slow walks and when left off leash, she tends to wander off but comes when called.

SAFER ASSESSMENT: 6/27/17 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 6/25/17 Unknown MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/25/17 ENERGY LEVEL: His previous owner reports a low activity level, which matches what we have seen in the care center. Dotty displayed low energy and movement throughout assessment. Dotty will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the (behaviors outlined below). _X_No young children (under 5)-While Dotty lived with children previously, she has shown considerable fear of strangers and interaction avoidance in the care center. We feel she may be intimidated by very young children. We recommend adopters prepared to go slowly with Dotty and allow him to warm up to her new home and new family at his own pace.

Potential challenges: _X_Fearful- Dotty takes some time to warm up to new people, though she shows good coping skills when uncomfortable. Her previous owner also notes that she is a bit shy. We feel she will do best with an adopter prepared to allow her to warm up to new people and new environments slowly. Use of treats and other rewards will help to make new experiences positive.

Dotty’s previous owner reported that she has lived with both small and large dogs and was always relaxed around them. 6/26: When off leash at the Care Center, Dotty briefly greets the male helper dog with a soft body but mostly avoids him, keeping to herself. 6/27: Dotty displays a soft body, when greeting a novel female. She explores her surroundings, mostly keeping to herself. When the other dog continues to greet her, she offers an appropriate warning ( low growl) before moving away. 6/28: In a group of calm dogs, Dotty keeps to herself, while wandering the pen. When a social female is introduce to the group, Dotty offers her a warning (lip curl) when she repeatedly greets her face to face. Her warning increases (low growls) when the female ignores her initial one.

DVM Intake Exam Estimated age: owner reports 8; teeth look more like 3 Microchip noted on Intake? no History: owner surrender due to deterioration of historical skin allergies Subjective: QAR, euhydrated, diffusely alopecic with many crusts and excoriations Observed Behavior – nervous but sweet, allowed all handling Evidence of Cruelty seen – none Evidence of Trauma seen – none Objective T = 102.4 BCS 5/9 EENT: Eyes clear, ears clean, no nasal discharge noted Oral Exam: mild dental tartar and staining PLN: No enlargements noted H/L: NSR, Grade 3/6 left basilar systolic murmur, strong synchronous pulses, Lungs clear, eupnic ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated U/G: intact female, significant mammary development MSI: Diffusely alopecic with multifocal excoriations and crusts. The head is mostly spared but the dorsum and flanks are badly affected. Diffuse papular dermatitis on the ventrum CNS: mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Rectal: loose, dark brown/green stool – no evidence of melena Assessment: generalized demodicosis with extensive secondary infection in a supposedly senior dog, heart murmur without systemic signs Plan: start cephalexin 500 mg PO BID x 14 days for secondary infection. New Hope partner should start Nexgard 1 tablet every 2 weeks for Demodex. Seek New Hope placement. Prognosis: fair SURGERY: Temporary waiver due to severe pyoderma
