07/27/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Dory has shown some concerns with small dogs in a foster home. She appears to interact appropriately with large dogs, but has lunged after and pinned smaller dogs (a bulldog and a Chihuahua). The dogs were introduced gradually and positively and the provocation for the lunging appears to be minimal (the smaller dog walking past). This has escalated to Dory biting one of the dogs on the back of the neck. We cannot be certain what the motivation is, but based upon the behaviors seen Dory should not be placed in a home with medium- or small-sized dogs, and may be most comfortable as the only dog in the home. We recommend an experienced adopter who can safely manage Dory and can keep other dogs around her safe. 7/19 SAFER assessment Dory came into the shelter as a stray on 7/15/16, there is some behavioral information Dory. According to the client Dory was kept in the home for a week. Dory is described as friendly and outgoing with strangers, she will engage in exuberant play. The client also stated Dory would engage in exuberant play with the two teenagers in the home. Upon intake Dory was described as energetic and allowed all handling while maintaining loose wiggly body. During SAFER Dory had a loose body posture when interacting with the assessor, she allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Dory was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resource portion of the assessment. Dory was easy to handle when engaged with the items. Dory appears to be sociable, and did not display any behaviors concerns, so the department feels she can be suitable for an “Average” adopter. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is open for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1:1 Dog quickly pulls back. Flank squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in toy, smell, then turns away. Dog-Dog:When off leash at the Care Center, Dory greets softly and is tolerant of the male helper dogs approach and sniffs. She appeared nervous, with raised hackles and pacing around the pen. Dory did correct appropriately with a head flip and growl when the other dog attempted to mount her.
