04/28/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
4/28 update: Doris remains social and appropriate outside the kennel, but is not thriving in it. She has begun to growl, bark, and jump at the front door of the kennel when approached. In this state she has not been responsive to treats as a distraction. We feel that moving from the kennel into a stable home environment as quickly as possible is in Doris’s best interest, to relieve the distress of being kenneled and to prevent her from continuing to rehearse this behavior. 4/25 SAFER: Doris came in as a stray, so her past behaviors in a home are unknown. During SAFER Doris came into the assessment room calm but curious about her surroundings, she was social towards the assessor with a slow approach. She allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Doris was fearful with her body low during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Doris was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Doris has been showing fearful behavior, we cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Doris is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. In addition, we recommend that introductions are done slowly, and Doris be given the opportunity to interact at her own pace. The behavior department feels she can be suitable for an experience adopter with no young children. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body a bit tense, and lip licks. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog smells, then turns away.
04/21/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Doris greets the other dog tentatively with a low body and tuck tail but eventually exchanges sniffs. She increases her distance from the other dog after he mounts her. She explores the yard and becomes uncomfortable with handlers at times. 4/25 update: Doris is looser today and approaches the gate with a soft body. Once inside the pen she does greet with a low head but spends most of the time avoiding contact with the helper dog.
