01/19/16 18:20 Basic information: Donte is a 5 year old male American Pitbull terrier. Donte was returned due to conflict in the home with another pet. He is described as stubborn, confident, and shy at first. Socialization Donte has lived with four adults; around children he is described as relaxed owner stated he will lay down and allow petting. He has not been around cats. Donte lived with another large breed dog in the home and is described as dominant. Owner stated his body will tense and hair will raise when around the other dog. Behavior Donte isn’t bothered when touching his food bowl while eating or taking a toy away from him. When trying to take away a bone from Donte he will freeze and hold onto the bone. Eventually after being told to drop it Donte will surrender the bone to the owner with no aggression. Donte is afraid of getting baths and will try to run away but once he is in the water will stay and allow you to wash him. When someone unfamiliar approaches the house Donte will bark but once they enter will greet them with a wagging tail. For the new family to know Donte was described as playful, affectionate, quiet, confident and friendly with a medium activity level. Donte enjoys playing with Squeaky toys and tug rope. Donte is house trained and is well behaved in the house. Donte knows the commands sit, down, turn over, stop and go. When walking Donte pulls hard on the leash. Donte will go to the bathroom on grass, cement and gravel. Donte Eats 2 cups pf Blue Buffalo limited ingredients once a day. Previous owner believes Donte would do great in a loving home with no other pets. Upon intake Donte was calm and had a loose body, he allowed all handling. Became fearful when scanning but allowed counselor to continue. Counselor was able to collar and scan (negative).
10/31/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: It’s hard to believe Donte is the same dog I met when he first arrived! He was initially very nervous and seemed shell shocked. He would shy away from touch and pancake whenever it was time to go back into the noisy adoption room. Now, he solicits attention from his cage, and as soon as I turn him loose in the yard he seems to do a play bow with every step! He is a little cross eyed, so when he does lingering ones it isn’t obvious who his target is – but with this out-of-his-shell Donte, maybe it doesn’t matter, he’s ready to play bow at the world! He loves treats, seems VERY housebroken, and is a pro at “sit” and “down.” He is reported to be well behaved when left alone, relaxed and gentle around children, and to hide during thunderstorms. He has skin allergies and can be a little sensitive to touch, but seems to love human company and likes to be pet in the right spots. On our most recent time together, Donte shuffled my way, put one paw on my knee, and licked my face! When I thanked him, he gave me an even bigger kiss, re-defined the play bow by doing one with his front paws on the bench and back paws on the ground, and then scampered off to play with a ball. Donte has acclimated, but he’d really love to move back into a home with a family of his own! Please come meet him at Brooklyn ACC!
01/21/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Donte previously lived with four adults, another dog and has been around children. The owner stated Donte is relaxed and will lay down and allow petting. The owner mentioned Donte lived with another large breed dog in the home and tends to be uncomfortable around them, his body will tense up and hair will rise when around the other dogs. The owner describes Donte as playful, affectionate, quiet, confident and friendly. The owner stated Donte is house trained, has a medium activity level and well behaved when home alone. It was reported by the owner when trying to take away a bone from Donte he will freeze and hold onto the bone, also the owner mentioned when trying to put Donte in his crate he will snap. It was mentioned by the owner Donte has been fighting with the other dog while in the home and has been biting and snapping at him and family members. At intake it was reported Donte was calm with loose body posture, he allowed all handling. During SAFER Donte came into the assessment room calm and relaxed, not all handling items were able to be conducted as Donte tried to bite at the assessor on paw squeeze item. He displayed no interest in toy item during this portion of the assessment. In light of this behavior we feel that placement with a rescue who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification is the best option at this time. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body a bit tense, mouth closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 5. Dog tries to bite. Toy 1: No interest.
01/21/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Donte greets other dogs politely but has very stiff posture when interacting. He seems interested in play but does not actually engage. Based on his behavior during playgroup, the Behavior Department recommends that Dante can go to a home with both male and female dogs. He seems to do well with non-playful dogs so we recommend he be placed with calm, non-playful dogs or a home with no dogs. 1/20-26 update: Donte greets with a stiff body but has some wiggle to him. Once he enters the pen he allows reciprocal sniffing and explores the yard. He does engage in very brief, slightly bouncy play.
