12/13/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Unaltered, Owner Surrender Previously lived with: Adults, children (ages 7 & 10) Behavior toward children: Affectionate and playful Behavior toward dogs: Ignores dogs he walks by Behavior toward cats: Unknown FG/RG: Will bark, growl, and bite if his food is touched while he is eating or anything is taken from him. Bite history: Has bitten a seven year old child and a sixteen year old. Both incidents took place when the children were trying to take food away from the dog. The bites both broke skin but did not require medical attention. Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Friendly, affectionate, and playful with a very high activity level. Other notes: Upon intake Dollar was tense but tolerated handling. SAFER ASSESSMENT: Summary: Dollar was brought into the assessment room. When a handler went to touch him, he growled, lunged, and grabbed her jacket sleeve. The assessment was not conducted. Note that the handler in the room was a familiar caretaker who had walked Dollar several times previously. She was not a complete stranger. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 12/4/16 During his initial medical exam Dollar appeared tense and nervous, trembling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to Dollar’s bite history with two children, we recommend an adult-only home _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Dollar has a multiple bite history. During his first few days he allowed only brief touch and was fairly aloof. With time he warmed up and allowed petting, and began to solicit attention from his caretakers. However, he has shown a rapid escalation to warning signs and a low threshold for arousal on at least one occasion in the care center, and he immediately escalated to biting at clothing. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide training and behavior modification to investigate these behaviors and address the risk of future bites before placement into a permanent home. We recommend only positive reinforcement, reward-based and force-free training with a qualified and experienced behaviorist for a dog with this bite history. Aversive methods are likely to increase fear level and increase the risk of future aggression. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: see notes above _X_Resource guarding: see owner notes. Dollar is reported to escalate to biting over multiple resources
