08/24/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Dolla and Pepper came to us as their owner became unable to care for them anymore. To my surprise, I discovered that Dolla was a boy, I guess, named after the rapper and not the word…doll. I had ribbons and roses all ready to put around his neck. Dolla has been beautifully cared for just like his housemate, Pepper. He is dressed in my favorite shade of brindle, the bright tiger orange version. His eyes are shiny and a big smile widens his face. He does not bark, his tail wags like a fan, and his butt wiggles vigourously. Dolla so wants to go out and be in company. He pulls a little on the leash and does his business at once. He is not fond of being tethered for pictures so we made it quick. He can sit on command and absolutely loves to come on the lap, kiss, kiss and kiss. I can see that he has the potential for getting carried away by his enthusiasm, mouthing a little and wanting to go after the leash. A firm and gentle NO takes care quickly of the issue. One has to understand that some amount of stress is to be expected for pooches who have been removed from their family environment. Dolla and Pepper were no yard dogs, they were well cared for pets. So…it is quite tough. I like Dolla, his looks and his affectionate attitude. I hope you will, too. Come and meet him soon at the Manhattan Care Center and make him yours, forever.
08/22/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Dolla came to the care center as an owner surrender citing housing issues. For his relief walk, Dolla was grabbing his leash and attempting to mount his handler. In the assessment room, he attempted to mount the handler as well, displaying exuberant energy; jumping, mouthing (hard). Dolla’s eyes were averted during Look, lip licking, ears back, body soft. He leaned into assessor during Sensitivity, body soft, tail wagging, mouth open. Dolla became excited during Tag, jumping high on assessor as soon as Tag began, and hard mouthing. He settled when the game was over. He does not pull back his paw on either Squeeze attempt. He showed minimal interest in Toy, sniffing it. On leash with another dog at the care center, Dolla approached quickly, tail high and wagging, body a bit stiff. The Behavior Team recommends Dolla be placed with an Experienced adopter with No Children. Dolla will benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, play, as well as durable toys such as kongs and nylabones to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. It is also recommended he be given an appropriate period of decompression to help him acclimate to his new surroundings. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Dolla to new and unfamiliar situations. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 3. Dog immediately jumps high and hard on Assessor and hard mouths. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Minimal interest. Dog may smell or lick toy, then turn away. Dog-dog: On leash with another dog at the care center, Dolla approached quickly, tail high and wagging, body a bit stiff. Dog-to-dog: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Dolla greets with a wagging tail, sniffs, then roams away and seeks handler attention.
08/23/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Dolla greets with a wagging tail, sniffs, then roams away and seeks handler attention. He arrived as an owner surrender, however here is no available history of previous interaction with other dogs, and it is unknown how his behavior will translate into a home setting. The behavior team feels that Dolla could potentially be adopted to a home with another dog pending a successful pre-adoption interaction and slow introductions.
