09/18/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Four cups of milk, one teaspoon of vanilla, one and a quarter cups worth of sugar, and plenty of care and love equals the delicious and well-known treat that is dulce de leche. But in half the time (well depending on where you’re coming from) and with half the ingredients (you’ll need to keep the love and care) you’ll have the gift that is 5 year-old Dulce. And that’s the gift that keeps on giving. My first exposure to Dulce is “oh that’s my boyfriend,” said by a staff member. It seems our little raisinette had already worked his magic and thoroughly sprinkled his charms. But despite already being spoken for Dulce joins me for a walk. And soon we’re amusing ourselves between blades of long grass under the mid-September sun. Dulce comes to us as a stray so not much about his history is known. He has bumps and bruises, some scrapes and some dings, cuts on his nose, a piece missing from his tail, and is very thin. But while one might assume Dulce’s list of wants is lengthy it couldn’t be more brief. The minute he’s unleashed he can’t get close enough to you, wanting to be right where you are, pushing his tiny, chocolate frame into yours so you’ll take him wherever you go. Dulce is a bright and energetic boy who would love an experienced owner and plenty of exercise to fill his day, and of course endless amounts of kisses. This fall’s most luxurious, delicious, and sugary sweet treat? The love of our Dulce (hold the leche). Dulce is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan ACC.

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for Dulce A1125552 KNOWN HISTORY: None 09/14/2017 Intact male, stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 09/17/2017 Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body tense, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching, may have long lip or lip lick. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff. Flank 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all Flank 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all Toy: 1. No interest Summary: While he displayed some social behavior, Dulce was a bit aloof and tense throughout his assessment, becoming stiff and uncomfortable (lip licking, tense) at times with some handling. PLAYGROUP: Dulce is muzzled for first off leash interaction. He is highly distracted by the presence of the muzzle, and only briefly acknowledges the presence of the other dog, remaining slightly tense. During an on leash introduction, Dulce is initially loose bodied, then appears a bit tense, aloof when greeting through the fence. He displays a slight freeze, then whale eyes. The behavior department recommends a single dog household for Dulce at this time, based on observation. History around dogs is unknown due to arriving as a stray. Follow up on behavior around dogs should be conducted with the assistance of a positive reinforcement trainer who can provide thorough follow up on Dolce’s behavior around dogs in a stable environment. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: 09/14/2017 Upon intake, Dulce allowed handling and was friendly. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 09/15/17 During his initial medical examination, Dulce was tense and attempted to nip.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience adult only home (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) _X_No children (under 13): Dulce has been extremely timid and hesitant to interact during his time at the care center. This, in addition to our lack of known history causes us to feel that Dulce will be most comfortable and most likely to thrive in an adult-only home at this time. _X_Single dog home/no dog parks: See PLAYGROUP Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Dulce has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times, especially when a person is reaching over him. It is important to always go slow and give Dulce the option to walk away from any social interaction. Dulce should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Dulce’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Dulce may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. _X_Fearful: Dulce takes some time to warm up to new people, though he shows good coping skills when uncomfortable. We feel he will do best with an adopter prepared to allow him to warm up to new people and new environments slowly. Use of treats and other rewards will help to make new experiences positive.
