MOST RECENT MEDICAL INFORMATION AND WEIGHT
01/12/2017 Exam Type BEHAVIORPART2 – Medical Rating is 2 NC – MINOR CONDITIONS NOT CONTAGIOUS, Behavior Rating is NH ONLY, Weight 95.2 LBS.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): We have no details on Dolce’s behavior around children, but due to his general fearfulness in the care center, his previous owner’s caution, and out of an abundance of caution, we recommend an adult-only home for Dolce. _X_Placement with a New Hope Partner (Due to the intensity of the behavior displayed in the care center, we feel that Dolce will be best set up to succeed through placement with a New Hope partner. We recommend only positive reinforcement-based, force-free training for Dolce as aversive methods are likely to heighten his fear and level of uncomfortability.) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: (Dolce would do best with a slow approach/slow introduction, speaking gently. He has been timid with his new caretakers and though he manages her stress well, Dolce needs assistance adjusting to new environments. He should be given time to warm up to new people and new places, and should be the one to initiate interactions.) _X_Single pet home (see playgroup)
12/28/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
Dog was not properly socialized from a young age. He was kept mostly indoors throughout his life. He is not good with children. He doesn’t know any commands. He is a big dog, owner couldn’t handle him. Responded well to medical evaluation upon intake.
01/08/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Have you ever met someone and just known there was so much more beneath the surface than what shows? That’s how I felt when I first met Dolce. He’s a big boy, 95 lbs, and like the meaning of his name, is incredibly sweet. He seems to be housetrained, is good on leash and ignores other dogs we pass. Although we were told that he doesn’t know any commands, he gave me his paw when I asked, after joining me on the bench sitting beside me as I pet him. We’re told that Dolce wasn’t socialized much so he’ll need a slow approach and time to warm up. He and I became friends quickly which he proved right away when he climbed up on the bench next to me. Dolce seems a bit confused by this new place that isn’t home, but is willing to give it all a try until he finds his new home. He’s smart and alert as he checks out everything happening outside our pen. Dolce didn’t want any of my treats, enjoyed playing with a squeaky toy briefly, and in group play is learning how to interact with others. We’re currently treating his ear infections, and he has a large hematoma in one ear that requires treatment as well. It has to hurt him. When our time together was over he hopped right back into his kennel. His face, his eyes are deep and thoughtful and I’m so rooting for him to find the person who will bring out the best in him. Musically, Dolce means to play tender and adoringly, and that’s exactly what our Dolce needs
01/12/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Limited Neutered, Owner Surrender (limited profile provided) Behavior toward children: Dolce’s previous owner stated that he is “not good with children.” No additional details were provided. Other notes: Dolce’s previous owner stated that he has not been properly socialized as a puppy. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 1/2/2017 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body a bit tense and trembling, his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body a bit tense, mouth closed Tag: 2. Dog follows at the end of the leash, a bit distracted and focused on exit Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, brief bouts of enthusiasm but quickly loses focus. Summary: Dolce was nervous throughout the assessment, but he allowed all handling. At times he was focused on the exit. PLAYGROUP: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Dolce appears a bit nervous upon greeting. When solicited, he bounces around with the other dog, then offers a small correction when no longer comfortable. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 12/28/16 During his initial medical exam Dolce was given a minimal exam and only allowed handling from a family friend. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Dolce has become increasingly difficult to manage during his stay at our care centers. Stress appearing to heighten his frustration level and threshold for arousal (seemingly low). Dolce has been observed to head flip multiple times upon some forms of direct touch, intensifying each time (has escalated to growling). Dolce has also been reported to actively lunge at certain people without clear warning. Due to his uncomfortability, Dolce is unlikely to thrive in the shelter environment and should be placed as soon as possible. ENERGY LEVEL:

12/29/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Dolce has been mostly uncomfortable and avoidant of approach from other dogs in the care center. The behavior department feels that Dolce would be most comfortable as the only resident dog pending followup outside the care center. Dolce should meet polite dogs on a slow, one-on-one basis. 12/29: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Docle appears a bit nervous upon greeting. When solicited, he bounces around with the other dog, then offers a small correction when no longer comfortable. 12/30: Dolce is uncomfortable with interaction and will run away from greeting. 1/3: Dolce runs away from approach. 1/4: Dolce mostly keeps to himself. He briefly sniffs a calmer dog when they are facing away from him. 1/6: Dolce interacts with small dogs and will approach to greet them while they are turned away. He, again, will run away with a face-to-face greeting.
