Hello, my name is Dojo. My animal id is #14529. I am a male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 11 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 25-Nov-2017, with the surrender reason stated as animal behaviour – aggressive to other animals.
Dojo is ta risk for medical reasons, having been diagnosed with Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex, which is contagious to other dogs. Due to past biting incidents, Dojo is looking for placement only with a New Hope partner.

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
Behavior during intake: Dojo had a tense body at first and was hiding behind the owner. After a few minutes, he approached the counselor and took a treat gently from the counselors hand. Counselor was then able to scan for a microchip and take a picture without any issues. Dojo then came over to the counselors and sat by the counselors legs with a relaxed body.
Basic Information:: Dojo is an 11 year old male that has no previous or current medical issues that the owner is aware of. Owner had Dojo for 7 years but had to surrender due to pet conflict.
Previously lived with:: 1 Adult, 1 Dog, 2 Cats
How is this dog around strangers?: Around strangers, Dojo is shy for a few minutes but once he warms up, he likes being petted and will play gently.
How is this dog around children?: Owner did not have any children in the home but did have family members who would come over with children of various ages and stated that Dojo was tolerant of the children but would prefer to stay to himself.
How is this dog around other dogs?: Owner had a female small breed dog in the home and stated that Dojo would bark at the other animal and stand over her but has never bit her until yesterday 11/24. Owner stated that when outside around other dogs, Dojo would pull to go towards them.
How is this dog around cats?: Owner had 2 cats in the home both male and female and stated that Dojo would snuggle and sleep with both of the animals and like to play with them
Resource guarding:: Dojo is not bothered when his food, treats or toys are taken away
Bite history:: Dojo does have a bite history with the most recent bite being 11/24/17
Housetrained:: Partially
Energy level/descriptors:: Low
Other Notes:: Owner hasw never tried to push Dojo off furnture or trim his nails so behavior is unknown. He is not bothered when someone approaches family members when outside. Dojo is afriad of being given a bath and having his coat brushed and will try to run away.
For a New Family to Know: Dojo is described as friendly and mellow. He has a low activity level and likes to play with balls. In the home, he liked to follow the owner around from room to room. Dojo was kept mostly indoors and is partially house trained. Owner stated that he would have accidents in the home where he would urinate several times a week. When left alone in the home or yard, he was always well behaved. Owner has crate trained Dojo previously and stated that he was well behaved. Dojo knows the cues come and stay. For exercise, owner would let Dojo run around in the yard. Owner would rarely ever take Dojo for walks outside but stated that when on leash, he would pull lightly. Owner has never tried to walk Dojo off leash so behavior is unknown.

Bite history:: Yes, Dojo has bitten a person and a dog. He bit a person who was outside his yard, he broke through the fence, growled, and bit the person on the behind leaving red marks but no broken skin. He bit the other dog in the home, walking up to her and biting her on the face, leaving one puncture.

Energy level/descriptors:: Dojo is described as friendly and mellow with a low level of activity.

Look:: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. Allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity:: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, and tail is in neutral position with a relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag:: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching, may have a long lip or lip lick.

Summary:: Dojo did not approach the assessor in the assessment room but allowed the assessor to approach him. He was social with the assessor and allowed all handling. During tag, he became a bit fearful, but was unresponsive when touched.

At the care center, he has been cautious when meeting new people, but will warm up given time. It is important to always go slow and give Dojo the option to walk away from any social interaction. Dojo should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Dojo’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Dojo would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
