09/12/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None Date of intake 9/9/2017 Unaltered male, stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: Date of assessment 9/12/2017 Toy: 1. Minimal Interest, brief enthusiasm toward the squeak sound, but does not fully engage, then backs away fearful at approaching hand. Summary: Dobby has only allowed minimal handling and appears to be very uncomfortable and fearful in this environment. Out of concern for his stress levels, we feel Dobby is not a candidate for the handling portion of the assessment at this time. PLAYGROUP: 9/12: When introduced off leash to dogs, Dobby is fearful and keeps to self. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Date of intake 9/9/2017 During intake, Dobby was tense with any quick movement, whale eye. He allowed handling when moving slowly. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Date of initial 9/9/2017 During his initial medical exam, Dobby snapped and only allowed handling with an experienced handlier. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Dobby so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, Dobby’s is displacing as timid with a low level of activity. IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: With select handlers Dobby has opened up significantly, allowing collaring and all handling. He will solicit attention and remain sitting in the lap of those handlers. He remains somewhat fearful of being removed from his kennel, but once outside will display social behavior. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Dobby has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Dobby has displayed fearful behavior in shelter, he displays no social behavior towards handlers and attempts to increase distance and avoid contact. Because he is so uncomfortable, Dobby does not tolerate any form of human-touch and has attempted to bite upon direct contact.
