Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 8/29/17, second stay at care center Spayed, Stray KNOWN HISTORY: Full Profile 4/1/17, first stay at care center (In previous home for one year) Spayed, Owner Surrender Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward strangers: Friendly and outgoing Behavior toward children: Playful and exuberant Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: No Energy level/descriptors: Diva is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, and excitable with a high activity level. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/31/17 Summary: Diva has displayed concerning behavior at the care center, jumping up and snapping at handlers when on leash. For this reason, she is not a good candidate for a handling assessment at this time. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: 8/29/17: When attempting to bring Diva to playgroup, Diva continually places her paw over the leash and bites it. She is double-leashed and begins snapping at the handler. She also growls when she sees another dog on leash. A through the fence greeting is conducted with a male dog and she greets politely. From previous stay: 4/2/17: When off leash at the Care Center, Diva greets the male helper with a neutral posture. She initially is anxious, breathing heavy, panting, and pacing around the yard but checks in with the other dog several times. Eventually she relaxes some and offers a few bounces in his direction. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: 8/29: Upon intake, Diva allowed handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: ENERGY LEVEL: Diva’s previous owner described her as having a high level of activity. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to over-arousal issues displayed in the care center, and the potential for this to occur in a home, we recommend an adult only home. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Diva has been difficult to handler at the care center, jumping up and snapping at the handler when walked on leash. The behavior department recommends Diva be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Diva to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Diva to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Diva presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X_Social hyper-arousal: At the care center, Diva becomes over aroused when walked on leash and jumps up, snapping at handler. This behavior was not reported by her previous owner and we do not know how or if this issue will present in a home environment. We recommend consultation with a qualified positive reinforcement, force-free trainer/behaviorist for any behavior Diva does display. _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center, Diva has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, growling at them. Diva may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
