A staff member writes: If you looked at 4 year-old Diva the red-nose pittie’s pictures and thought she seemed worried, that would be because she has quite a bit of responsibility — her 10 week-old black pup Diamond! The adorable pair is currently sharing a cage at the Manhattan shelter because they were abandoned by their owner. Like all good mommies, Diva prefers to keep herself between you and her baby, and although she’ll bark when in her cage, she actually can’t help but be the sweet and affectionate girl she was before she became a single, homeless mother. I knelt down at her cage while she was barking and said hello, and Diva promptly stuck her tongue straight through the bars to kiss me, and the little pup did the same. Diva looked a bit concerned to leave Diamond and head out for her walk, especially because the pup was doing little somersaults to try to follow her mom, but off we went, with Diva showing how excited, housetrained and affectionate she could be. She pulled on the leash but responded quickly and dramatically to correction — at the slightest pull of the rope, Diva cowered as if used to being hit, and for the first half of the walk, had the same reaction when I’d try to pet her. Diva behaved as if she had a lot on her mind — distracted, on full alert to any potential danger (a garbage truck, a bicyclist) — in short, exactly how a mother protecting her young should act. When I’d speak to her and rub her belly, it was as if I were snapping her momentarily out of a trance, because she’d relax her tensed muscles and wiggle around me, licking and enjoying the attention, before returning to her post of vigilance. Diva is a very tiny reddish-tan shade of pittie at only 35lbs, and as soon as we returned to her cage, she promptly licked her pup with enough force to roll her over on the bed numerous times, which Diamond enjoyed greatly. There is just no way to spend even 30 seconds with this little pint-sized family and not feel protective of them, admiring of her tender care for her baby, and an overwhelming need to keep them together. Diva and baby Diamond — who share adorable forehead wrinkles in different colors — are waiting for a place to call their own.
