08/03/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Dino has a big head that features the eyes of an old soul, JOWLS, and a smile that makes him worthy of being the model for all 12 months of a pitbull calendar. His leash manners are sometimes lacking, but he makes up for it with a contagious enthusiasm: adventure, here we come! He is quiet in his cage (but has perfected his pleading face), seems housebroken, and knows “sit.” He’s treat-motivated and seems to be an experienced (and successful, no doubt) beggar; he rests his head on my knee and shoots me a look that would make you think he hadn’t eaten in weeks! He wasn’t super interested in the stuffy toys I offered him, but is a fetching super star. He’s definitely curious about his surroundings and seems fairly independent, but is very friendly and waggy and it doesn’t take long for his affectionate side to come out. He’ll lean against my legs when I pet him, do the limbo and scratch along when I hit an itchy spot, then do a zoomie celebration that has my lap as its finish line. Once there, he thoroughly licks my face and hangs around to survey the surroundings — so sweet! So while Dino isn’t prehistoric, he does embody a timeless charm…please come meet him today!
07/27/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Behavior upon Intake: Dino was very friendly and easy to handle. Dino came into the shelter as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. During SAFER Dino had a loose body posture when interacting with the assessor, he allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Dino was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resource portion of the assessment. Dino was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Dino has shown some concerns during playgroup; Dino diplayed a stiff body posture with a low growl, he also lunged at the other dogs in the pen. Due to his behavior the department feels he can be suitable for an “Experience” adopter; we also recommend Dino being the only pet in the house-hold. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is open for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, distracted. Squeeze 1/2:1 Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. No interest. Dog-Dog:Dino displays stiff body language when greeting another dog through the gate. A muzzle is placed on him before he is allowed into the pen. Once in the pen, Dino displays stiff body language as he greets the other dog. He begins to low growl and then lunges at the other dog. The session is ended. 8/28/16: Dino has shown concerning dog reactivity since arriving at the Care Center in playgroup (see GROUPBEHAVIOR entry for more details). Today this behavior was also reported while Dino is on leash and he has become increasingly concerning and difficult to manage safely- lunging and snapping at dogs in kennels and while on walks outside. Due to the safety concerns for staff and volunteers handling Dino and for the other dogs housed in the Care Center, the Behavior Department feels that placement should be sought as soon as possible. We also feel that Dino would benefit from supervised dog socialization and leash reactivity sessions with a professional behaviorist or a positive reinforcement trainer who can help countercondition his response to other dogs.
07/27/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Dino was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior around dogs is unknown. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Dino displays stiff body language and requires a muzzle before being introduced. When greeting other dogs Dino becomes stiff and may begin to growl and lunge at the other dog. Due to this reactivity towards other dogs, the Behavior Department recommends that Dino be placed in a home with no other dogs. 7/27: Dino displays stiff body language when greeting another dog through the gate. A muzzle is placed on him before he is allowed into the pen. Once in the pen, Dino displays stiff body language as he greets the other dog. He begins to low growl and then lunges at the other dog. The session is ended. 7/29: Dino was muzzled before being allowed into the pen. Once on the pen, Dino displayed stiff body language as the other dog greets him. He mostly keeps to himself, becoming stiff when she approaches him.
