DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Summary MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 4/28/17 During his initial medical exam, Diggy was tense and resisted handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Diggy’s previous owner described him as having a medium level of activity.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Diggy is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Diggy has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can first address his medical needs and then provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Diggy is very sensitive to handling, barking and snapping when touched, possibly due to his medical condition. It is important to be cautious when touching him as we do not know where he may have sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Diggy to be more comfortable with this _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Diggy’s previous owner reported that Diggy will bark and growl at dogs outside. Diggy will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs and novel stimuli that may startle her. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
