A volunteer writes: Do you have ombré-colored hair and have always wanted a dog to match? Do you love amphibians, but are really more of a dog person? Well, let me introduce you to the perfect dog for you (and he’s unique like you, too!): Patches! His unique webbed toes and tri-colored coat first drew me to him, but it was Patches’ personality that made me fall in love. Patches has got to be one of the happiest dogs I’ve ever met–stopping to say hi to everyone he passes, tail wagging wildly and constantly like a helicopter, and full of energetic curiosity about everything around him. Anyone would be lucky to have Patches–he has the kind of infectious and joyful personality that you just can’t ignore. Come and snap him up at the Brooklyn ACC before someone else does!
03/24/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full profile 3/13/17 Neuter status, Owner surrender (2 months in the previous home) Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward strangers: Friendly Behavior toward children: Unknown Behavior toward dogs: In the dog park, chases small dogs, wrestles with big dogs Behavior toward cats: Chases them when on leash outside Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: Yes, Patches bit twice in the two months in his adoptive home. The first was a bite to the leg and hand in January when the owner grabbed Digger’s collar to prevent him from darting out the apartment door. Exact severity of the bite is not known, but the punctures did leave scars. The second bite was the day before Patches returned to the care center. Details are limited, but the bite was to the index finger and required plastic surgery to appropriately close. Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: High activity level Full profile 1/4/17 Unaltered Male, Owner surrender (with previous owner for 4 years) Previously lived with: 2 adults and a cat Behavior toward children/dogs: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Unknown – though he lived with a cat, they were kept separated and never interacted Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: No – Patches was kept in a basement and eliminated there, though he also eliminated in the yard. Energy level/descriptors: Patches is described as playful and active SAFER ASSESSMENT: 3/24/17 During his previous stay, Patches showed no concerns on a SAFER handling assessment. However, upon return Patches is showing a higher level of anxiety, is quick to use his mouth and has a lower threshold for arousal, and is not as comfortable with handling. With time and attention Patches has warmed up to his caretakers and begins to solicit attention. However, due to the behaviors observed during his current stay, his bite history, and the presence of a previous handling assessment, a new SAFER assessment will not be conducted at this time. PLAYGROUP: Patches’ previous owner reported that he has not been around other dogs. When off leash with other dogs at the Care Center, Patches greets the helper dog hesitantly with some anxiety- tense body, quick movements and some avoidance. He does eventually greet and solicits some attention but does not engage in play.
IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: While Patches is social and friendly outside the kennel, his presence in the kennel has been challenging. When approached he often dodges the rope and jumps up to avoid being leashed. This is improving slowly with the use of positive reinforcement (treats) but prevents him from moving into adoptions. We believe the kennel environment is detrimental to his behavioral health and recommend that he move into a stable home environment as quickly as possible. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 3/13/17: During his medical examination, Patches was friendly and allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Patches displays a high activity level in the care center. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13)- Patches appears to easily arouse and become anxious with up close handling. Due to this and to the bite history, we strongly advise against a home with children. _X_No cats – Patches is reported to chase cats while on leash outside. We do not know his behavior toward cats when he is in close proximity, but out of an abundance of caution for cats’ safety, we recommend a home without cats. _X_Place with a New Hope partner- Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends Patches be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Patch to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Patches to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Patches presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition- Patches has been quick to use his mouth as an anxiety behavior and/or to seek attention. _X_Handling/touch sensitivity- Patches reacted at least once to having his collar grabbed by turning and biting the person on the hand and leg. _X_Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression- Patches bit twice in his previous home. Without intervention, there is a significant risk of future bites. _X_Anxiety- Patches has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, barking) continually through play sessions outside.
01/05/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Patches’ previous owner reported that he has not been around other dogs. 1/5: When off leash with other dogs at the Care Center, Patches greets the helper dog hesitantly with some anxiety- tense body, quick movements and some avoidance. He does eventually greet and solicits some attention but does not engage in play. 1/7: Patches met a calm female dog and displayed the same anxiousness with a tense body. He had quick movements and was a bit sexually motivated. 1/10: In a group of calm male and female dogs Patches briefly greets the other dogs before pacing in the pen. He begins to relax slightly as the session continues. 3/22: According to Patches’ recent owner, he spent time with small and large dogs in the dog park. He tends to chase the small dogs and wrestle with the larger dogs. Patches is muzzled prior to entering the pen due to his DOH status. Patches displays conflicting behavior at the gate, showing a loose then stiff body. He is allowed to interact with the novel female off leash and is mostly occupied with the muzzle but shows tolerance to her play solicitation.
