09/30/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Intact male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 9/29/16 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Diesel displayed no concern during his behavior assessment. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: PLAYGROUP: 9/29/16 According to Diesel’s finder, Diesel got along with the finder’s dog. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Diesel displays high energy when greeting male and female dogs. He rushes at the gate, sticking his nose through, displaying loose and wiggly body language. A handler holds on to his leash to slow him down and he immediately mounts male and female dogs when they attempt to greet him. He persists after handler interruptions and the sessions have to be ended. The Behavior Department recommends that Diesel be the only dog in the home, however a dog-dog interaction can be conducted with a potential adopter’s dog to assess their comfort level with Diesel’s mounting behavior.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/28/16 Diesel was sociable and allowed all handling during his initial medical examination. IN-SHELTER BEHAVIOR: Diesel showed no behavior concerns during his SAFER and continues to be social towards humans however he has shown a propensity to respond to attention or excitement with concerning over-arousal behaviors. Diesel on several occasions has mounted handlers, grasping his legs tightly around them and is very difficult to deescalate and get him to release. He also has become increasingly mouthy, biting at and grabbing clothing as well as his leash when being walked. He has redirected once while biting at the leash, catching a handler’s hand but not bruising or breaking skin. He appeared to be focused on the leash when this happened. These behaviors may be a result of being housed at the care center but also may arise during his transition to a new home. Due to these challenging behaviors when handling or interacting with Diesel, the Behavior Department feels that he is be suited for an experienced adopter who can manage these over-arousal behaviors safely. ENERGY LEVEL: High level of energy. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopters _x_Recommend no dog parks
