Diesel
Hello, my name is Diesel. My animal id is #18318. I am a desexed male gray dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 14-Jan-2018, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving – no pets allowed.
Diesel 18318 is at risk for increasing stress in the shelter environment. He would do best in an adult only home with enrichment and exercise. He is overweight but does not have any medical concerns.
A Little Bit About Me…
A volunteer writes: Diesel is a giant doofus! I mean that in the most affectionate way possible. He’s such a big lug and seems unaware of his size, tripping over his own feet when chasing a ball, falling off the playyard equipment as he tries to sit, and losing his balance when he give me paw. Well, he’s entertaining to say the least! He also seems housebroken, and according to his former owner, is friendly with strangers, gentle with kids and loves to play with toys (though in my experience he also likes to destroy said toys equally as much!) Diesel is just a big love bug looking for a family that can accommodate such a happy, silly guy. Ask to meet him today.

Behavior Condition: 1. Green
Diesel had a loose body and a wagging tail during intake. Diesel would approach staff and sit in front of them to have his head petted. Diesel allowed staff to collar, scan for a microchip and take pictures with no signs of aggression.

Basic Information:: Diesel is a large breed male dog who was surrendered due to his previous owner moving to a placed that does not allow animals and was unable to find him a new home.
How is this dog around strangers?: Around strangers Diesel is friendly/outgoing and plays gently with adults.
How is this dog around children?: Diesel has lived with children from newborns to age 2years old, around them he was friendly and played gently.
How is this dog around other dogs?: Diesel has not spent time with other dogs so it is unknown how he will react to them.
How is this dog around cats?: Diesel has not spent time with cats so it is unknown how he will react to them.
Resource guarding:: Diesel is friendly when someone touches his food/bowl while he is eating or takes a treat/toy away.
Bite history:: Diesel has never bitten another person/animal.

Other Notes:: Diesel is friendly when someone pushes/pulls him off of the furniture, holds/restrains him, disturbs him while he is resting/sleeping,gives him a bath, brushes his coat and trims his nails. If an unfamiliar person approaches his family/home Diesel will be friendly towards them.

For a New Family to Know: Diesel is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident and mellow. When at home Diesel will follow around his owner and likes to play with all toys. Diesel was fed dry food. Diesel is house trained and rarely has any accidents. When left alone at home Diesel is well behaved.Diesel has not been crate trained and knows the commands sit, stay, come, give paw and roll over.

Look:: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.
Sensitivity:: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, tail is between legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick.
Tag:: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends (may need coaxing to approach). Dog is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor.
Paw squeeze 1:: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff.

Summary:: Diesel came into the assessment room quiet and anxious, he was a bit social towards the handlers but was cautious around his surroundings(panting, lip licking with his tail down).
Summary (1):: According to Diesel’s previous owner, Diesel did not socialize with other dogs. 1/16: When off leash at the Care Centers, Diesel greets the novel female dog with a neutral posture. Once the pen door opens, Diesel rushes towards the greeter and immediately offers her a hard correction. He is separated after the handlers grab his leash.

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Diesel is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time.

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity: Dog has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times, especially when a person is reaching over him. It is important to always go slow and give dog the option to walk away from any social interaction. Dog should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Dog’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Dog may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Fearful: The behavior department recommends allowing Diesel to approach his potential new adopters at his own pace. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Diesel to new and unfamiliar situations.
