06/19/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Diamond and I are inseparable…. There is no way I can take a picture of her whole body or even her face without having myself unfortunately in it…Diamond is a love bug, a velcro dog, a bit anxious and so needy of human presence. Looking at her, her rotund shape, her perfect coat, her great state of health , her dislike to return to her kennel, and her sociability, I know that she was a house dog, a family pooch, just yesterday… Maybe she was left behind when her people moved….Diamond is quiet in her den. I thought at first that she was not used to a leash, going here and there on our walk… Once it the park, she was a perfect walker, pulling just a little, not forgetting to do her business in one stop. A “break” under a tree and in the shade was most welcome, mostly after a drink of fresh water and a snack. Not that Diamond needs more food. A treadmill should be more like it on her wish list….Diamond really enjoyed the park, the smells , kids running around and of course, my lap… She is a real tank who does not know her weight and size. Diamond has so much love to give and such a need to belong. I really love this big gal who will be a wonderful friend and confidant to the new owner who will give her the chance to be adopted and offer her a caring home. Diamond is at the Manhattan Care Center, dreaming to be yours.
06/23/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
6/23 SAFER update: Diamond has exhibited high levels of anxiety and stress while in our care. While in her kennel she is constantly panting hard and whining/barking. Once removed she walks close to the handler, typically always touching his or her legs and will exhibit the same in-kennel behaviors throughout any interactions. When off-leash with other dogs her anxiety level does not decrease and she will howl/bark when left alone. The behavior department feels that Diamond could go to an experienced home but it is best for her to leave the environment as quickly as possible. 6/18 SAFER:Diamond pulls a bit on the leash. She was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up. Diamond was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. She was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Diamond was easy to handle when chewing on toys. Diamond is an active dog she need a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. Her body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) She is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you.
06/19/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Diamond has largely displayed anxious behavior when brought outside for off-leash socialization. She ofen paces the yard while whining, and has not displayed interest in interaction or play, at times becoming uncomfortable with ineraction. Due to Diamond’s anxious behavior displayed while in our care, her observed behavior around other dogs in the shelter may not be a clear or accurate read on how she behaves around oher dogs in a home setting. She arived as a stray, so behavior history is unknown. The behavior team feels that Diamond should be allowed time to decompress in a new home environment before following up on her behavior around dogs outside the shelter. 6/17: When off leash with other dogs, Diamond is anxious and seeks exit. 6/19: Diamond is anxious and approaches the helper dog, to offer a correction. 6/21: Diaond is axious, whines, pants, paces, however eventually approaches to sniff the helper dog. 6/22: Diamond is anxious and avoids interaction.
