05/25/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes, “This young lady appeared quite nervous, yet with bounds of energy. She was pulling strongly. So I formed a harness out of the leash, and it seemed to frighten her. Oh dear. She is like an m&m candy. Strong on the outside, soft on the inside. And sweet, too. Thus, her fear melted my heart. For some reason, she was hesitant to go through doorways. But her previous owners said that she is super friendly around strangers, and plays gently with adults and children alike. So I knew that I could bring that out in her. In the park, I sat her down and showered her with rubs and scratches to help boost her confidence. This seemed to work, as she calmed down and heeled better on the way back to the shelter. She has a big heart and would benefit from regular walks and affection. She is just lost and confused in this new and loud environment. All she needs is to belong again, and this m&m candy will turn into a marshmallow.”
05/24/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Diamond pulls a bit on the leash. She was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, wagging tail, open mouth. Diamond was calm and relaxed during handling. She was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Diamond was not interested in toys. Diamond was surrender to us. According to her previous owner she is friendly, affectionate and playful. She has a high energy drive. Diamond is super friendly around strangers. She plays gentle with adults and children. She has never lived with another animal. If she sees a cat outside, she tries to chase it. Diamond allows you to remove her food bowl, or water bowl, she will growl if you try to remove her Kong chew toy with peanut butter in it”. Because of her owner surrender profile the behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching, may have long lip or lip lick. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy 1.
