A volunteer writes: Talk about your Diamonds in the rough!!! Diamond is exactly that. She was surrendered to the shelter when her owners where evicted. A skin condition (easily treated) temporarily took the shine out of this Diamond.  All of that aside, Diamond is a very sweet, low key puppy who has made several doggy and people friends at the shelter.  Diamond walks well on leash and sits for treats.  Diamond is in need of a loving home: one that will put the shine back in her.  Please come to Staten Island ACC and meet Diamond.

WHY ARE YOU BRINGING THIS DOG IN? Owner was evicted from his home and has nowhere to go with the dog.

RELATIONSHIP Owner has had the dog for 7 months.

PEOPLE

The dog lived with 2 adults.

Does he get along with children? Yes. She is gentle with them.

Does he get along with strangers? Yes. She loves people and attention.

Describe her personality: Diamond is described as playful, excitable and friendly. She has a high activity level and was kept mostly indoors. Diamond is partially house trained and can have a few accidents in the household especially when left home alone. She does not like her food touched and will bark and growl if someone does so. With toys and treats she is fine when they are taken away from her, she will just be playful. She is not bothered when being pushed off the furniture, given a bath, having her coat brushed, being restrained and having strangers come to the house. She does not enjoy having her nails trimmed. Diamond loves balls and playing tug of war. She has been crate trained and owner stated she is tolerant of it. She loves attention from people and will always want to be in the room with someone. When left alone, she gets anxious and will sometimes destroy household items and go potty indoors. When off leash, she will run away. She has been left alone in the backyard and stayed there for hours without any issues.

OTHER ANIMALS

Diamond is relaxex and plaful around big dogs but can be rough with smaller dogs. Around cats she is very tolerant.

HABITS

She was fed dry food brand purina and wet food brand Alpo.

Diamond knows sit, down, come and stay.

Behavior: Experienced Home

Diamond came into our center as an owner surrender citing housing issues. It is reported she lived with two adults and would bark/growl if her food was touched. Owner reports Diamond is crate trained but if not crated and left alone unattended in the home she will sometimes destroy household items. Owner states Diamond is relaxed and playful with big dogs but can sometimes play too exuberantly with smaller dogs, and Diamond is tolerant around cats. Diamond pulled a bit on her relief walk. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body soft. She leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, tail slightly wagging. Diamond was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game. She did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Diamond was difficult to remove out of the Food bowl, body becoming a bit stiff. She took Toy away, body loose. Diamond took Rawhide away, body neutral. She approached helper dog at an appropriate pace, ears forward, tail at spine level, body not stiff. Due to her potential for possilble possessiveness, the Behavior Team feels Diamond would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have very young children. Any older children should have an in-depth interaction before considering adoption. Diamond may benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, play as well as durable toys such as Kongs and Nylabones to positively direct her puppy energy. She should continue being crated when left alone in the home to avoid any destruction of household items as previously reported. Diamond may benefit from puppy obedience classes to learn leash manners and focus.

Look: 1. Eyes averted,tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.

Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth.

Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game with coaxing. She is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor.

Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed.

Food: 3. Dog follows the dish, her tail between her legs, ears forward, body is a bit stiff, lifts head with a lot of pressure from assess-a-hand.

Toy: 2. Takes toy away, keeps a firm hold,body loose. No growling or stiffness.

Rawhide: 2. takes rawhide away-body neutral

dog-dog: ears forward, tail spine level

Group Behavior:

When off leash with other dogs, Diamond is very social and often engages in mouthy play.

10/30 update : Diamond continues to be social and often solicits play to male and female dogs, she can be pushy at times.

10/31 update : diamond is social and engages in play in a large group of male and female dogs.

11/3 – 11/4 update : Diamond continues to be very social and will often engage in play.

11/5 – 11/6 update : Diamond continues to be tolerant and engage in rough and rowdy play with male and female dogs.

11/7 update : Diamond continues to engage in rough play and will often solicits handlers attention.

11/10 – 11/12 update : Diamond continues to be social  and playful when off leash with other dogs, she will often solicit handlers attention as well.
