08/27/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Dexter is a little shy and timid, but a whole lotta sweet!! She was found abandoned in a building (how could you walk away from that face?!) so we don’t know much about her history. She has been very easy to handle on leash, seems to have housetraining and is very quiet in her cage. After spending some time with her she’s warmed up to take treats gently from my hand, lean against my legs when I pet her, and prop her paws up on her cage door after I put her in. She perks up whenever we see a dog outside — whining and even pawing at the fence in hopes that she can go outside and say “hello”! She seems like a very gentle, sweet, sensitive girl! I’m sure she has a playful, wiggly side waiting to emerge…maybe you could be the one to see it! Please come see her at Brooklyn ACC.
08/19/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Dexter came into the shelter as a stray, so her past behaviors in a home are unknown. During intake Dexter was calm and allowed handling. During SAFER Dexter came into the assessment room a bit shy with a tense body posture when interacting with the assessor, she allowed handling items to be conducted but was fearful. Dexter was tense during the tag interaction, and during the resource portion of the assessment. Dexter was uncomfortable but appears to be sociable; she did display some behavior concerns due to fear, so the department feels she can be suitable for an “Experienced” adopter. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body tense, and mouth closed, ears back. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. she is distracted with her tail tucked. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back. Toy: 1. No interest. Playgroup:When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Dexter is very nervous as she greets the other dog with a low body and tucked tail. She greets the other dog and is tolerant of his greeting as she explores the pen.
08/19/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Dexter was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Dexter was initially very nervous. With further play group session, Dexter has become more relaxed and wanders calmly with male and female dogs. Dexter is utilized as a greeter dog. She displays soft body language as she greets novel male dogs. She is tolerant of persistent play solicitations and attempts to mount her. She does not engage in play but displays loose and wiggly body language as she wanders in the pen. The Behavior Department recommends that Dexter be placed in a home with a dog that matches her calm energy level. 8/19: Dexter is very nervous as she greets the other dog with a low body and tucked tail. She greets the other dog and is tolerant of his greeting as she explores the pen. 8/23: Dexter is more comfortable today as she wanders in a group of calm, female dogs. She is social, checking in on the other dogs often. 8/25-8/26: Dexter is utilized as a greeter dog today. She displays soft body language as she greets novel male dogs. She is tolerant of persistent play solicitations and attempts to mount her. She does not engage in play but displays loose and wiggly body language as she wanders in the pen.
