DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: According to Devin’s previous guardian, when playing with other dogs Devin is gentle. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Devin displays soft and social body language in a group of calm male and female dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/8/17: During her medical examination, Devin would show teeth, lunge and snarl.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_Place with a New Hope partner- Devin has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding- Devin is reported to growl and snap over food. She should be left alone while eating, and should be taught the cue “drop” and other trade up games so Devin learns that dropping food or having people around while she is eating is rewarding. Behavior modification protocols for food guarding behavior can be found on aspcapro.org _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression- Devin has attempted to bite during her stay in our care centers when uncomfortable; guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Devin to new and unfamiliar situations.
