01/25/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Deto came into our center as an owner surrender citing he has been snapping at people. It is reported he can be fearful around strangers but is gentle around adults he knows. Owner reports Deto has not been around any children. He has spent time with another small dog and owner reports they were relaxed and playful together. Owner reports in the past Deto has barked, snapped, and bitten if an unfamiliar person approaches a family member. It is reported he will growl when toys are taken away. Owner reports Deto is housetrained and has not had accidents in the home. It is also reported when left alone in the home Deto is well behaved. Owner reports Deto knows the commands ‘sit’, ‘dow’, ‘stay’ and ‘paw’ in Korean. During intake, Deto was barking, alert to his surroundings, and only allowed limited handling. He low growled in his cage during his medical exam, uninterested in human contact. Deto pulled on leash for his relief walk. He was tense and uncomfortable upon entering SAFER assessment room, head and body low, alert to any sudden movements, eventually allowing some petting on his back with lip lick. Due to his owner surrender profile and the level of discomfort he displayed in assessment area, tactile portions of the SAFER have been skipped. He approached the helper dog at an appropriate pace, ears back, tail at spine level, appearing interested. Deto must be placed with a New Hope partner who can slowly introduce him to new environments so he has time to relax and know what to expect. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip neutral.
