Descartes
Hello, my name is Descartes. My animal id is #18743. I am a male tri color dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years old.
I came into the shelter as a aco impound on 19-Jan-2018.
Descartes was placed at risk due to behavior concerns; Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Descartes has shown some escalated warning signals in the care center (growling, jumping on handler); it is important to make sure Descartes stays under threshold so he is not pushed to escalate further to biting.
My medical notes are…
Weight: 54 lbs

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: Place with a New Hope partner: Descartes has displayed behavior concerns in the care center (jumping up and growling on handler); this combined with his current health status, we believe placement with a rescue partner would be most beneficial at this time. No children (under 13): We are recommending an adult only home at this time due to the handling concerns displayed in the care center.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Handling sensitivity: It is important to be cautious when touching Descartes in certain areas as we do not know where he may have sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Descartes to be more comfortable with this. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Descartes has shown some escalated warning signals in the care center (growling, jumping on handler); it is important to make sure Descartes stays under threshold so he is not pushed to escalate further to biting.
