03/08/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: A big bruiser of a boy, Denver is my handsome date for a walk to the park. Likely housetrained he ‘goes’ when he finds the perfect spot. Denver pulls on the leash until he finds that spot, and then walks nicely, until he finds something that must be investigated, pulling to get there faster. Funny boy! He’s gorgeous, beautifully groomed in his gray coat, his weight ample — I call him stocky! Off leash in the yard, Denver joins me on the bench for a quick kiss before darting off to wag his tail at other dogs passing our pen. In his first group play session, he greets appropriately and then goes off to explore. His tail wags, he smiles at me, sits with some coaxing and enjoys some treats. Friendly and soft for a boy his size, Denver is hoping to meet his new person quickly to share a lifetime of walks, play and snuggles. He’s definitely an attention grabber and hopes to grab yours. Be sure to meet him when you visit. (Copy-paste link to video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?
03/08/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Denver pulls hard on the leash. He was not sociable, and was more interested in the surroundings than the handler during the assessment. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Denver was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He took the toy away with a soft body language. Denver did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that he can go to an Average home. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Playgroup Notes: When off leash with other dogs, Denver ignores greeting, and is distracted by scents in the yard. Eventually, he approaches and postures to mount the female greeter- but does not follow through.
03/07/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Denver greets and sniffs but is typically quite distracted by smells in the yard. He will posture to mount but often does not follow through; however, when he does he is persistent and does not cease with handler correction (he is currently unaltered). He arrived at the care center as a stray, so any in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. The behavior department recommends Denver have a pre-adoption interaction before going to a home with other dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Denver ignores greeeing, and is distracted by scents in the yard. Eventually, he approaches and postures to mount the female greeter- but does not follow through. 3/9 update: Denver greets very briefly but continues to be distracted by scents in the yard. 3/9 update: Denver is persistantly sexually motivated with a female dog.
