05/27/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Denise is a favorite gal here at the care center. Why? Super simple…she has a shiny and cheery personality, a beautiful smile, laughing eyes and loves to be among people, going from one caretaker to another and looking as happy as a clam. Who would not want to be in such a company? Denise is quick to roll on the ground for belly rubs, rushes for kisses and hugs or sits at the feet of a staff, listening to a conversation that seems like music to her ears. Although she has not yet retrieved, she knows what a ball is and runs happily after it. This girl is really a keeper! She is a good walker and does her business at once as we exit the building. She sits nicely on command and takes treats properly from my hand. She seems to like other dogs, wags her tail at a little one and almost play bows to a pooch her size. Denise, a very pretty and girly female, came to us as she was left behind when her owners were evicted. So, you see, she is with us through no fault of her own, but life circumstances. Denise is great forever best friend “material” and will make a most awesome, fun and loving companion. Come and meet her soon at the Manhattan Care Center.
05/26/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 5/23/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/26/2017 Look: 1. Dog leans forward to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game, indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begin but settles easily at end of game. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed Toy 1. Dog playfully engages, will relinquish toy to you. Summary: Denise displays high energy and movement, she shows a fairly low threshold for arousal, jumping up onto assessor and desk, though recovered well. PLAYGROUP: In the care center, Denise has shown moderate interest in greeting other dogs who are respectful and calm. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Denise and other polite dogs in the future. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/23/17 During her initial medical exam, Denise allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Denise so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center Denise displays as a high energy, social dog, body always remained soft. She will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend food puzzles and long lasting chews, as well as daily walks, runs, and play to positively direct her puppy energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: At times Denise jumped up with her front paws onto desk, as well as jumped up excitedly onto assessor. It is recommended that default behaviors such as ‘leave it’, ‘sit/stay’, and ‘down’ are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impoulses instead of simply reacting. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.
