05/12/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
05/12/17 16:01 Denim is a 3 year old pitball who came to us with his sister whose owner could not keep them due to personal issues. Owner has had them their wholelife and got them when they were two weeks old. They visited a vet a year ago and had a clean bill of health. Denim is very outgoing with strangers and immediately runs up to them to greet them. He very much likes to be in your face. there is a 1 month old in the house that he is gentle with and gives kisses. He has only been around slightly older children a few times, sometimes he is gentle and playful and other times he has barked and growled at the child. When playing with adults he is gentle. He lives ina ome with his sister who he is very bonded to but he will bark, growl or linge towards other dogs and is kept a distance from them. He does not play with other dogs. He will chase any cat he sees. He has never bitten another person or animal before. Denim is not house trained and uses the bathroom indoors. He does not destroy house hold items. He is not bothered by having his food, treats or toys touched or taken while he has them and does not mind sharing with his sister Jean. he is ok with being restrained. He will struggle and may run when it is bathtime but will allow once in the bathtub. He allows himeself to be brushed. He barks when someone approaches the door. Denim has a high level of energy at home and likes to follow owner around the house and be in the presence of other people. He only plays with kongs and needs a kong to direct his chewing attention towards. He sleeps wherever He’d like and is fed dog chow dry food with white rice twice a day but can be picky and does not always like the same food, especially wet food. He does not like when people fight in front of him and he gets easily excited and may nip or bite if someone is fighting or play fighting with owner. he is not very house trained and has accidents almost daily but uses teh weewee pad behind his sister if he sees she will use it. He is well behaved when left alone other than going potty indoors. he has been crate trained and is ok with it and stays in there no longer than 7-8 hours during the day. he does not know any commands and pulls very hard on the leash and is not walked off leash. Intake behavior Denim entered shelter with a loose body and wagged his whole body and jumped on counsleor when he approached and immediately went to lick his face. He allowed all handling with energy and fervor.

A volunteer writes: For a second, I thought that Denim and I had made a rare, super strong connection on our first meeting but it turns out that Denim treats everyone like BFF’s pretty much right away! According to his former owner, Denim is outgoing with strangers and will run up to greet them. He loves to be in your face and give kisses. When I sat on the ground he rubbed up against me like a cat, eventually flopping over on to his back with his head in my lap just begging for belly rubs. Sure enough, when I saw him later with a staff member, he was stretched over his lap, soaking in all of the petting and baby talk he could get, smiling ear to ear. Denim is a rather small guy and reminds me of a puppy, but at 3 years old he’s past those annoying puppy antic days and is more interested in chilling by your side, giving you smooches than tearing up the house. He has lived with another female dog who he was bonded to, but gets a little over excited when encountering other dogs outside. I guarantee Denim will make you feel like you have a special bond in only a matter of minutes! Ask to meet him today!

The Behavior Department recommends that Denim be placed with dogs that match his calm sociability. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/13/17 Denim did not like handling. Tries to escape, and appeared fearful. ENERGY LEVEL: His previous owner reports a high activity level, which matches what we have seen in the care center. Denim displayed high energy and movement throughout assessment. Denim will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home _X_No children (under 13)- While Denim showed no issues with the child in the home, he has shown a number of warning and distance-increasing behaviors towards children outside of the home. Due to these behaviors we recommend an experienced adopter and an adult-only home. _X_No cats- Denim has shown an intense focus on cats and as a result poses a potential safety risk for cats. He must not go to a home with resident cats or where he may come into contact with cats. Potential challenges: _X_House soiling- Denim is reported to have frequent accidents in the house, and appears not to have been housetrained in the past. He will need guidance and consistency to learn to eliminate outside. We recommend crate training (the crate must be made positive and never used as a punishment), frequent walks, rewards for eliminating outside (treats, toys, games), consistent feeding schedule, and careful monitoring when inside. Accidents should never be punished as it can damage the human-dog relationship and is likely to make the problem worse.
