01/17/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Dell should have a sign on his cage that says “ask me about my terrible first impressions!” He greeted me with his funny gruff bark that may lead some people to believe he’s unfriendly, but his wiggly body and wagging tail tell the true story. Once leashed up and on his way to the park. Dell’s personality shined. Dell is an awesome walker! My own dog weighs about half as much as Dell and is nowhere near as good on a leash. But we aren’t here to talk about my shortcomings as a dog trainer, we’re here to talk about Dell. In the park, Dell enjoyed some head scratches when we pulled over to sit on a bench. Dell is a gentle dog who aced his behavior assessment upon arrival at the shelter, friendly to both the two legged and four legged creatures he encountered. Dell was found as a stray, so he’s clearly fallen on some hard times but he hasn’t let it stop him from being friendly, calm, and easygoing. Come meet Dell at the Manhattan ACC today. Another volunteer writes: Get to know a handsome, friendly dog named for a beloved TV character from my childhood? You don’t have to ask me twice! Dell (or Dell boy as I like to call him) is waiting at the front of his den literally begging for a walk and it’s clear that just like his namesake he’s a cheeky guy with the ‘gift of the gab’, an irresistible charmer who won’t be denied. As demanding as he seems in his kennel is as sweet and docile as he is outside and behind that bold grin lies a very affectionate and surprisingly low-key companion. He’s not one for toys (why play with plastic when there are humans around?) but Dell boy is thrilled to meet other dogs large and small, eager to jump up for a lingering hug (and some kisses!) and excited to explore all the foreign scents of a winter afternoon in the park. Dell boy does have some health issues that need a bit of TLC but his energy levels and appetite are just fine and his heart is pure gold. It’s no surprise to see he received perfect scores on his behavior evaluation and if anyone is going to make the most of being given a second chance, it’s this guy. Dell boy may be down-on-his-luck but his spirits are never anything but up and he’s ready to light up the life of your family today. Take him home and watch him shine!
01/15/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Dell walks calmly on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Dell was calm and relaxed following the assessor during the tag test. He was not interested in toys. Dell did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that he can go to an Average home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, ears back, low tail. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. No interest. Playgroup Notes: When off leash with other dogs, Dell greets politely, and offers a few more brief sniffs toward the helper dog before roaming the pen.
01/14/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Dell greets well but may attempt to mount the female dog; other interactions he may explore the yard. He is currently unaltered and has not yet been introduced to another male. He entered the care center as a stray so his in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. Based on these observations the behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction before placing him into a home with other dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Dell greets politely, and offers a few more brief sniffs toward the helper dog before roaming the pen. 1/19: Dell greets a female dog, follows and shows more interest in mounting.
