SAFER 1 of 2: 02/26/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
On 2/18/2015 Dayday came to us as a stray. A person called The Staten Island Care Center claiming to be the owner. This person claims Dayday lived with and gets along with children, and gets along with smaller dogs; no bite history indicated. During the assessment Dayday appeared friendly and allowed the Assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items. He appears to accept handling well. Dayday showed no interest for food and relinquished both toys and rawhidet. It is the recommendation of the Behavior Department Dayday may be adopted by an owner with an average amount of dog experience. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds Food: Inconclusive, dog is not eating. Toy: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish rawhide to you.
SAFER 2 of 2: 3/13/15- SAFER – Experienced home
Dayday interacts well with humans, loose and wiggly and social, but has shown some concerning behavior around other dogs (as detailed in the Group Behavior entry). He shows similar behavior in his kennel in response to other dogs that he does through the barrier when introduced to a social group. He barks and lunges when dogs walk by his kennel. With regards to the kennel behavior we again cannot be certain whether this is offensive aggression toward other dogs or a form of barrier frustration, but it is in DayDay’s best interest to leave the kennel environment quickly. Due to his behavior around other dogs we recommend a single-dog home, and experienced adopters willing to work with a trainer or a behavior modification specialist to address the underlying anxiety. Any future introductions to other dogs should be done slowly and carefully, with safety tools in place.

03/04/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When introducing Dayday to another dog for off leash play, he became very reactive at the gate. Upon seeing the other unaltered male dog, Dayday stiffened and fixated. He then lunged at the gate while hard barking with tail high, ears forward and weigh shifted forward. The interaction was ended at this point and it is unclear if this behavior is a result of barrier frustration or frank aggression towards other male dog or other dogs in general.

A shelter staff member writes:
DayDay was brought in as a stray and is a sweetheart. We later found out that he was not a stray and found his original owner. They can no longer keep him due to the baby’s allergies. As per the owner, DayDay is great with children and small dogs. He has been respectful to the staff and did great on his eval! We treated him for kennel cough and he can be neutered and on his way to you!
