03/12/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Mr Mustard…hmph. I would rather call him Honey. Indeed, he is quite sweet and one of my best lapdogs, not ashamed to lodge his 71 pounds across my thighs, his big head pressed against my chest. Scratches under the chin are most welcome. I love dogs like Mr Mustard. Quite good looking, Mr Mustard seems to have been reasonably well cared for, sports a nice oreo coat that could use a good brushing and wears an attractive patch over his right eye, to make sure he does not get un-noticed. Mr Mustard is friendly in his kennel, quiet, and licks the flat of my hand. He is leashed quickly, pulls on the walk and relieves himself without marking in the street. He can sit on command and for treats that he takes politely from my hand. Mr Mustard seems fine with other dogs. Being an un-neutered male, he does mount in playgroups, but runs also happily with his peers. I know that most often, visitors will overlook middle aged or close to middle aged pooches. Look carefully at Mr Mustard, though. He is quite a nice gentleman, friendly, sociable and very affectionate and who could be the best friend you always dreamed of. Mr Mustard is waiting for you at the Manhattan Care Center. Come and meet him soon. Copy-paste to browser search bar for video: https://youtu.be/NsvrP83zOBI

Mr. Mustard walks calmly on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Mr. Mustard followed the assessor at the end of the leash with a calm and relaxed body language when playing tag with assessor. He was not interested in toys. Mr. Mustard did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that he can go to an Average home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, ears back, wagging tail, open mouth. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. No interest. Playgroup Notes: When off leash with other dogs, Mr Mustard is a bit sexually motivated but does run with the female helper.
03/08/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Mr Mustard engages briefly in play with females, with the ultimate goal to mount. When introduced to a male dog, Mr Mustard displays a tense body, approaches, and T’s his shoulders. Based on observation made during playgroup, the behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction for Mr Mustard to ensure compatibility with a resident dog. We advise against placement with a male dog at this time until his behavior around them can be followed up on. He arrived into our care as a stray, so in-home behaviors with dogs are unknown. When off leash with other dogs, Mr Mustard is a bit sexually motivated but does run with the female helper. 3/9 update: Mr Mustard becomes a bit bouncy and playful. He displays some sexually motivated behavior. 3/10 update: Mr Mustard offers bows and briefly solicits from the other dog. 3/13 update: Mr Mustard engages in brief bouts of play with intent to mount. 3/15 update: Mr Mustard engages in bouncy play. 3/16 update: Mr Mustard greets a female appropriately. When introduced to younger male dogs, he becomes a bit tense and T’s their shoulders.
