A volunteer writes:

Darling is just, well…darling! She has such a gentle, low-key charm and though she arrived as a stray it’s clear that until recently this gorgeous young blond was very much a pet. Her coat is lush, soft and so beautifully cared for and she’s sweetly social with people and calm with other dogs too. A great leash walker, a delicate treat sniffer (though my offerings are politely rejected!), seemingly house trained and very easy to handle, Darling is a little beauty with a beautiful nature to match. She’s friendly yet independent and likes to explore her surroundings and she prefers playing chase to chewing toys, happily vocalizing as the game ramps up. Affectionate but not an in-your-face snuggler, Darling’s favorite form of petting is butt rubs and she’ll contentedly lean against my legs for as long as I care to scratch the sweet spot just above her curly tail. She has the tell-tale teats of a former Mom and I can only imagine how unbelievably adorable her puppies must have been but now it’s Darling’s time to shine as the beloved ‘baby’ of a new forever family. She’s already aced her behavior assessment and would make a wonderful addition to almost any home. Come on in to the Manhattan Care Center and ask to meet our most charming Darling today!

BEHAVIOR:

Darling walks calmly on leash.  She was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, low wag. Darling was calm and relaxed during handling.  She followed the assessor at the end of the leash with a calm and relaxed body language when playing tag. Darling was not interested in toys.

Darling did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that she can go to an Average home.

Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.

Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture.

Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, wagging tail, open mouth

Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds.

Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds

Toy 1: No interest.

Group 6/23:  When off leash with other dogs, Darling offers brief polite sniffs, then wanders the yard to explore.

6/24 update: Darling greets both males and females politely but is more interested in exploring her surroundings. She is uncomfortable when solicited with play and will run away until the other dog ceases.

For more information on adopting from the NYC AC&C, or to find a rescue to assist, please read the following: http://urgentpodr.org/adoption-info-and-list-of-rescues.

If you are local to the Tri-State, New England, and the general Northeast United States area, and you are SERIOUS about adopting or fostering one of the animals at NYC ACC, please read our MUST READ section for instructions, or email helpdogs@urgentpodr.org. Our experienced volunteers will do their best to guide you through the process.

* We highly discourage everyone from trusting strangers that send them Facebook messages, offering help, for it has ended in truly tragic events.*
