[Spay/Neuter Waiver – Age] It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

Summary:: Dante is difficult to remove from the kennel, growling and baring his teeth at the leash. He appears to be uncomfortable or afraid of the slip lead. He has also allowed minimal handling from his caretakers. Out of concern for his stress levels and his response to restraint, we feel Dante is not a great candidate for a handling assessment at this time. Please see his owner surrender profile for a full summary of his behavior in his previous home.
Summary (1):: Dante’s previous guardian reported that he is not good around other dogs. 2/26: The Behavior Team was unable to collar Dante for playgroup today. He was displaying appropriate warning signs- lip licking, dodging, head bowing- that he was very uncomfortable with the potential handling required. He did greet the female helper dog at the gate with a neutral posture. Another attempt will be made tomorrow. 2/27: Today, the Behavior Team was unsuccessful collaring Dante. He continued to lip lick, whale eyeing and tensing up.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: New hope partner: Dante has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Dante has displayed fearful behavior in shelter, he displays no social behavior towards handlers and attempts to increase distance and avoid contact. Because he is so uncomfortable, Dante does not tolerate any form of human-touch and will bite upon direct contact.
