Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted, body posture is stiff and fearful, tail is low and not moving. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, tail is between legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick.
Tag: 5. Dog growls, snaps, or tries to bite.
Toy: 1. No interest.
Summary: Damion did not approach the assessor in the assessment room and moved away when the assessor approached him. He had a tense, trembling body and tucked tail. When touched during tag, he snapped, so the rest of the handling portion of the assessment was not completed.

Date of intake: 19-Dec-2017
Summary: Damion had a tense body and tucked tail. He froze when approached.
Date of initial: 20-Dec-2017
Summary: Damion was tense.
ENERGY LEVEL: At the care center, Damion displays a medium-low level of activity.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: NEW HOPE ONLY
Recommendations: No children (under 13), Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:
No children: Due to Damion’s history of not allowing handling from new people, as well as how fearful he currently is at the care center, we recommend an adult only home.
Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the potential for defensive aggression reported in his previous home, as well as seen at the care center, the behavior department recommends Damion be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Damion to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Damion to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Damion presents with outside of the care centers.
Potential challenges: House soiling, Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:
House soiling: Damion is noted to have accidents in the house, and will likely need guidance with house training. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only.
Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Damion is reported to not allow strangers to handle him and has been fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Damion the option to walk away from any social interaction. Damion should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Damion’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Damion would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
