9/14/16 17:30 Basic information: Dale was brought in as a stray. The police found him on the street, the police placed Dale in a large dog carrier and brought Dale to the shelter. No other information could be provided during intake. Intake Behavior: During intake Dale had tense, stiff body. Dale growled at us in the crate but once out he was relaxed and allowed handling. Dale allowed to be scanned (negative), collared, and placed in a dog kennel.
09/18/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Easily overlooked, a plain black dog with an imperfect coat like Dale is truly a hidden treasure. Trust me, come and meet him and hopefully, you will see what I see…A GOOD DOG…made by mother nature and his own mother to be man’s best friend, the loyal and trusted companion we all dream to have by our side. Dale is calm in his spic and span and orderly kennel. He is leashed easily and does not come out like a jack in a box. Dale must be one well house trained dog! I love the way he softly bounces in front of closed doors, showing his excitement to go for a walk. Dale strolls nicely and is really happy to meet other dogs in the street. He play bows and tries to get his peers to join him. It is lovely to watch. His behavior in playgroups with his kind matches what I observed on our walk. He sits obediently on command, displaying a large and gentle Pitie smile. Dale did not really care for my treats, though but seemed glad to demonstrate his obedience training skills. He is a perfect model for the camera. Cuddling is one of his specialties. A bench, a human and a pooch is all that’s needed to demonstrate a loving bond…Dale made my day. I am looking forward to seeeing him again but my utmost wish is to see him adopted very soon, cared for and loved… Dale is the one, the young buddy who will be with you for years to come, building happy memories forever to cherish….
09/23/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
9/23 update: Dale has begun showing concerning behaviors while in his kennel. Today a staff member placed her hand up to Dale’s kennel bars at which point he immediately lunged forward, barking and growling. While Dale’s behavior still remains social and appropriate outside of his kennel, it is in his best interest to leave the care center quickly so as to not further rehearse these behaviors. 9/16 SAFER: Dale pulls hard on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up. He was overexcited during handling, jumping up, grabbing at the leash, mouthy (light) and was hard to position, but showed no aggression. He was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He took the toy with a soft body language. Dale is an active dog he need a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation. The behavior department feels that he can go to an experience home who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Playgroup Notes: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Dale greets politely. He is tolerant of play solitation and offers a few brief hops in return. The behavior team feels that Dale may be adopted to a home with another social dog. Dale arrived into our care as a stray, so there is no available history of previous interaction with other dogs, and it is unknown how his behavior around dogs will translate into a home setting.
