08/27/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 8/24/17 Unaltered Male, Owner Surrender SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/27/17 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog head flips while pulling back paw. Flank squeeze 1: 5. Dog lunges towards assessor, barks and growls. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Dakota appeared aloof during the beginning of his assessment. When his paw was touched, he head flipped, so the assessor attempted to switch hands on his collar for flank squeeze. When the assessor reached towards his collar, he lunged towards her, barked, and growled. PLAYGROUP: Dakota has not been completely comfortable while interacting with dogs in the care center, and has been tense during in shelter introductions. At this time, we recommend allowing him a period of decompression outside the shelter environment before immediate introduction to unfamiliar dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/24/17 During his initial medical exam, Dakota allowed handling but was whale eyed and head flipped. On a lter exam, he turned his head and snapped when touched. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Dakota so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, he displays a medium level of activity.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to handling discomfort displayed at the care center, the behavior department recommends an adult only home. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to growling and snapping with some forms of handling at the care center, the behavior department recommends placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification in a stable home environment that will best set Dakota up for success in a future adoptive home. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: At the care center, Dakota has growled and snapped when touched in certain places. It is not clear exactly where his sensitivities are. It is important to be cautious when touching Dakota as we do not know where he may have sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Dakota to be more comfortable with this.
