04/14/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 4/12/17 Unaltered Female, Stray Other notes: Upon intake Dakota was very friendly and playful; she was a bit mouthy with the rope. She allowed all handling. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 4/14/17 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (need coaxing to approach.) She is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1:1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2:2. Dog gently places her open mouth over the Assessor’s hand applying light pressure. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Dakota was playful but becomes very anxious and mouthy towards the assessor with light pressure. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Dakota displays a high level of arousal -growling, muzzle punching and barking- when greeting novel dogs. She is only able to briefly sniff other dogs before growling and lunging at them. Dakota was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. Due the Dakota’s reactivity towards other dogs, the Behavior Department recommends that Dakota be the only resident dog at this time. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 4/13/17: During her medical examination, Dakota was playful and displays high energy, she allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Dakota so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home _X_No children (under 13): Dakota appears to easily aroused and becomes mouthy with light pressure and up close handling, for these reasons we advise against a home with children at this time. _x_Single-dog home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to the reactivity displayed by Dakota towards other dogs, the Behavior Department recommends that she not be placed in a home with other dogs at this time. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Dakota manage and decrease her arousal level and learn how to socialize with other dogs properly. Potential challenges: _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: While she applies only light pressure; Dakota was mouthy throughout the assessment and is quick to put her teeth on skin. This is likely an attention-seeking behavior, but it should be replaced with an alternative behavior as it can frighten people. We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy – and ending play or attention whenever Dakota puts teeth on skin. She should be rewarded with attention and treats when she stops and/or when she is seeking attention in alternate ways. _X_Anxiety: Dakota has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, barking) continually through the SAFER and through play sessions outside. This behavior was not reported at intake, and we have no known history on Dakota, so we cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment.
04/14/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Dakota displays a high level of arousal -growling, muzzle punching and barking- when greeting novel dogs. 4/14: Dakota begins to bark and run along the fence when greeting a novel male dog. Her arousal level continues to increase as she starts low growling and muzzle punching the gate. A muzzle is placed on her as a precaution. Once in the pen, she low growls and lunges towards the male dog’s back. She does not engage in play when solicited. 4/15: Dakota displays the same behavior and a muzzle is placed on her as a precaution. She is able to momentarily sniff the other dog before growling and lunging at him. 4/24: Dakota is muzzled and allowed to greet a soft female dog. She jumps on the dog once, but once interrupted she ignores the other dog and fixates on the muzzle.
