03/04/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Hey hey hey! My name’s Daisy and I’d like to welcome you to Tongue Out Tuesday…and Tongue Out Wednesday, Thursday, Friday…well, you get the picture! I’m a girl who loves to hang loose any day of the week; exploring on foot, giving and getting hugs, sitting (mostly) for treats and playing with my people and my toys. Everyone says I’m a lotta fun to be around and that I’m pretty darn cute, too, and I even overheard one of the volunteers call me ‘tiny but mighty’. I can guess why–she was such a slowpoke I had to jog her down the street myself, sheesh! I may look like an adorable little potato, but I’m not meant for lazing on the couch, and I really hope my new family wants to get out and about as much as I do. Something else to know about me is that I got perfect scores on my behavior assessment!!! I’m still a bit awkward around other dogs (maybe my last family didn’t show me how to socialize) but with slow introductions to respectful companions I know I can learn to be a better party guest. Right now I do need my playdate shyness to be respected and not have things pushed too far, too fast, because you better believe I know how to push back! I’m kind of like a cupcake that’s made from scratch using only the finest ingredients. Just blend my natural sweetness together with some committed attention, a little positive training and a whole lot of exercise then bake under the warmth of your love for a few weeks and voila! A delicious doggie treat to make you proud. I’m already what they call ‘spayed’ and ready to go home with you right now, so come pick me up today and together we can chill out with our tongues out. It’s gonna be so much fun!
02/28/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: 2/27/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 2/28/17 Look: 1. Dog jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, bit distracted. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Daisy displayed a high amount of energy on her assessment, jumping up softly. She allowed all handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: 3/1: When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center Daisy is anxious and seeks hanlder attention. She does not approach or greet. She ignores approach from the helper dog. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 2/27/17 During her initial medical exam, Daisy was tense. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Daisy so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. She jumped up on the assessor during her assessment in what appeared to be an attempt to get closer to the assessor. She is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (suitable for a home with an average amount of dog experience) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control (It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.) _X_No dog parks: Daisy may succeed best with slow introductions to dogs, on a one on one basis.
03/01/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
The behavior department recommends allowing Daisy time to decompress in a new environment before immediate introductions to other dogs. Future introductions to polite dogs should be conducted slowly, and on a one on one basis. 3/1: When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center Daisy is anxious and seeks hanlder attention. She does not approach or greet. She ignores approach from the helper dog. 3/2: Daisy will briefly interact with male and female dogs in the yard. She is uncomfortable with play and offers a strong correction when solicited (snapping, barking and chasing after–she will stop herself after a few seconds).
