Daisy
Hello, my name is Daisy. My animal id is #19990. I am a desexed female brown dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 9 years old.
***A private donor has graciously offered $250 to the New Hope Partner that pulls Daisy***
I came into the shelter as a stray on 05-Feb-2018.
Daisy is at risk for behavior reasons. Daisy has been very fearful whilst at the care center and allows minimal handling – displaying warning signs of her discomfort including growling and hard barking. Daisy is a little overweight and has a slight heart murmur, but appears to be an otherwise healthy dog.

Date of intake:: 2/5/2018
Spay/Neuter status:: Yes
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray
Previously lived with:: Adults and spent time with children
Behavior toward strangers:: Shy and takes several days to warm up to people.
Behavior toward children:: Pays kids no attention and keep her distance

Housetrained:: Yes
Date of assessment:: 2/8/2018
Summary:: Daisy appears to be uncomfortable or afraid of the slip lead. She has also allowed minimal handling from her caretakers. Daisy displays a very high fearful level and avoids interactions. Out of concern for her stress levels and her response to restraint, Daisy is not a great candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (1):: Daisy previously participated in group in August of 2016. She was nervous around the other dogs, and mostly kept to herself. She currently display these behaviors- avoiding most interactions. We do not have information about her past behavior with other dogs. The Behavior Department believes Daisy would be most comfortable as the only resident dog. Any other resident dog should be respectful and matches her calm demeanor. 2/6: When off leash at the Care Centers, Daisy is fearful and avoids interacting with the male helper dog. She stands on the bench, displaying a tuck tail and is visibly shaking. 2/7: Daisy briefly greets a nervous female puppy face to face, then investigates the pens by herself. 2/8-10: In a group of calm male and female dogs, Daisy explores the pens, mostly keeping to herself.

Additional Behavior Notes:
Trazadone treatment started on: 2/6/18
2/11/18 7:30am: Daisy was up at the front of her kennel. She wiggled a little and sniffed at my hand. No growling, hard barking.
2/9/18 8:00 am: Daisy was hard barking, baring teeth and growling when I approached her kennel.
2/8/18 11:40am: Daisy was laying on her bed, on her stomach, not as tightly curled up as yesterday. She looked at me with soft eyes but lowered her head. Continues to improve outside, allowed minimal handling, but continues to pace consistently.
2/7/18 1:00pm: Daisy was laying on her bed, tightly curled. She lifted her head and gazed in my direction with soft eyes, then slowly turned her head. She displayed no distance increasing behaviors and was not shivering. Daisy also displayed less fearful behavior during PG with both human and dog; exploring the yard, greeting the dog 2 times and sniffing human handlers (see Group Behavior notes).
Date of intake:: 2/5/2018
Summary:: Unknown
Date of initial:: 2/5/2018
Summary:: quiet, cautious but allowed handling.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: New hope partner: Daisy has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Daisy has shown high levels of fear in the care center in each interaction, though she displays warning signs (growling and hard barks). She needs a very slow approach and the ability to warm up to new people and new environments at her own pace. Daisy should be permitted to initiate interactions and solicit attention when she feels comfortable, rather than being forced to interact.
