A volunteer writes: Although so quiet in his kennel, it was clear he was hoping I’d pick him next for a walk. Our boy is stunning — long legs, elegant, gorgeous face, perfect weight…I mean he could be the cover of Doggie GQ. He’s that handsome. Our first stop once outside was Cupid taking care of ‘business’, and off we go to the park. He does pull on the leash, so a harness and/or some leash training will help. Stand up hugs and kisses, and all was forgiven, as this awesome dog won my heart. Off leash in a pen, he prances like a thoroughbred horse, his long, elegant legs high stepping as if to music. Cupid loved playing with a ball, got the zoomies briefly, and was so obviously happy I hated bringing him back to his kennel. Clearly a cherished companion before he joined us, Cupid is hoping to find a new person or family to love and take care of. He’s hoping you’ll stop by to meet him today.

Summary: Cupid displayed no behavioral concerns on his assessment. He did show a high amount of energy, jumping up and in constant motion. Cupid will need daily physical exercise such as runs, walks, and play, and mental stimulation, such as Kongs and puzzle toys. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: According to Cupid’s previous owner, Cupid has interacted with other dogs and very rough when he is around them and becomes very mouthy and likes to wrestle. During Cupid’s first stay at the Care Center, Cupid was uncomfortable with interacting but will socialize with male and female dogs. He briefly engages when solicited with soft play, but when it becomes more exuberant he is, again, uncomfortable and will move away from the helper dog. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 02/20/17 During his initial medical examination, Cupid allowed all handling.
ENERGY LEVEL: His previous owners describe Cupid as a high-energy dog. In the care center he has been active and enthusiastic. He may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. Cupid will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help her to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends Cupid be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Cupid to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Cupid to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Cupid presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X_House soiling _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended _X_Social hyper-arousal _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Decreasing the force of the mouth as well as the frequency of mouthing, in this order is recommended by using force-free, reward based training as well to reinforce a soft appropriate mouth and redirect hard inappropriate mouthing onto toys _X_Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression
