01/02/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Crystal is a beautiful girl with a sensitive soul, a dark gem whose precious heart remains shrouded in mystery. Could she be a lover of toys? Games? Snuggling? She’s never anything but soft and gentle and in a real home anything is possible, but for now Crystal’s shyness and fear in the Care Center environment don’t give too much away. She’s easy to leash, open to being petted and quite polite when being dressed in a bandana or offered a treat and she seems to like other dogs very much, running to the fence to meet them whenever one passes by. I hope to see her open up and show us more of the ‘real’ Crystal soon but I’d be even happier if she left for a new life with a patient and affectionate family and never looked back. Take a chance on Crystal and she’ll repay you with the best gift of all…her grateful, loving heart.
01/02/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Limited Unaltered, stray, with finder for 2 weeks (profile provided by finder) Previously lived with: With finder, exposed to adults, a child (age 2) and a cat. No details about her behavior around the child or cat were provided. Other notes: Crystal was timid at intake, body held low, but she allowed some handling with a slow approach. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 1/2/2017 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body is tense and trembling; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog leans into assessor’s hand and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, tail tucked, body stiff, head low, mouth closed, ears back, lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, distracted Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back Toy 1. Minimal interest, responded to squeak sound but did not fully engage Summary: Crystal was hesitant to approach assessor upon entering SAFER assessment room, but did allow handling, remained alert. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Proximity Sensitive: These dogs have had a poor history of social experience with other dogs or could be extremely fearful in the shelter environment. They are socially shy and may exhibit fearful body posturing (tucked tail, head low, snarling etc), defensive posturing (lunging, barking, snarling etc.) or physically avoid/ignore other dogs. They will emit warning signals to the other dog to back away but if they are forced to interact they may snap. PLAYGROUP: Crystal has appeared fearful during interaction with other dogs in the care center. At this time, Crystal may be most comfortable as the only resident dog in a home until her behaviors can be followed up on outside the care center. Crystal may do best if allowed a period of decompression beforehand. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:12-30-16 During her initial medical exam Crystal appeared to be very nervous, growled and would not allow handling.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home _X_No children (under 13): Due to Crystal’s high level of fear in the care center and hesitancy to interact with her caretakers, we recommend an adult-only home for Crystal. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Crystal has shown fearful behavior since entering the care center. She does best with a very slow approach, speaking softly and gently. It is important to make sure Crystal is not forced to interact, as she has escalated to growling as a warning when highly uncomfortable. _X_Single pet home: At this time, Crystal has appeared uncomfortable while interacting with other dogs in the care center. It can not be said for certain how her behavior around dogs will translate into a home setting. _X_No dog parks: See above.
