06/02/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Crystal previously lived with adults and children ages 4 and 15 years old. The owner stated around strangers Crystal is shy and takes a long time to warm up to new people but will engage in exuberant play with adults once she gets to know them. The owner mentioned with the children Crystal is relaxed and affectionate around them. It was reported by the owner Crystal does not like when her feet are touched and will bark and pull her paws away. The owner also reported Crystal is house trained, has a medium activity level and well behaved when home alone in the yard. At intake Crystal was tense with her tail tucked, handled with assistance from the owner. During Crystal’s medical exam she cowered during the whole exam and when approached she growled and avoided interaction. In the kennel Crystal can be seen in the back with her body very low and consistently lip licks with eyes wide. Crystal was walked several times by members of the Enrichment team, tolerating being leashed and walked but avoiding interaction, increasing distance, and refusing high-value treats. Due to her high level of fear and her discomfort with close proximity to her caretakers, Crystal is not a candidate for a SAFER aggression assessment at this time. Her previous owner notes no major behavior concerns in the home, but does indicate that Crystal was timid with strangers. She does not seem to be acclimating well to the shelter environment, so we recommend that she move into a stable home environment as quickly as possible. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can re-evaluate her behavior and who can provide any necessary counterconditioning and positive reinforcement-based behavior modification needed.
